Job Description

Responsible for safety of all pool users.

Under the authority of the Recreation Coordinator, the specific functions include but are not limited to:

  1. Responsible for enforcing pool regulations and correct any violations in a courteous manner.
  2. A lifeguard is in complete and absolute authority and persons not complying with the regulations. These patrons can be temporarily excluded from the pool at the lifeguard's discretion. Only the Pool Manager and/or Recreation Supervisor may suspend persons for longer than one day.
  3. Guards will not spend more than a few seconds correcting infractions. If the person continues to argue, refer them to the manager.
  4. Conduct individual swim tests for any person they have doubts about swim ability. Any refusal will require for the person to stay in the shallow end where they can touch.
  5. Customer service will be the upmost importance when talking with a patron. When communicating infractions choose words carefully as to not offend.
  6. Assist in the overall cleanliness of the facility.
  7. Arrive ready to work no later than 15 minutes prior to opening.
  8. Responsible for knowing the emergency action plan at the pool.
  9. Responsible knowing how to take water samples and report findings to the Pool Manager.
  10. Responsible for storing all lost and found articles in assigned area.
  11. Performing other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • 15 years of age or older.
  • Certificate of lifeguard training.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • AED certification preferred.
  • Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
  • Available to work shifts.
  • Physically fit, strong, agile and dexterous.

Knowledge of:

  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic health and safety practices.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to learn proper methods of teaching swim lessons.

Ability to:

  • Work independently with little direction or as a member of a crew.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Subject to outdoor environments: seasonal heat, temperature changes and extreme weather conditions.

Physical demands include lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. Standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time.
