Why work as an Emergency Room Travel Nurse in Waterloo, IA?
Working as an Emergency Room travel nurse in Waterloo, Iowa offers big-city experience with small-city convenience. You can choose between two busy ERs-UnityPoint Health - Allen Hospital and MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center-serving the broader Cedar Valley, which means a wide case mix from farm injuries and industrial trauma to cardiac, stroke, and pediatric emergencies. Iowa is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so onboarding is streamlined, and agencies frequently offer generous night/weekend differentials and completion bonuses. Lower housing costs stretch stipends, and short commutes keep burnout at bay; most assignments are 10-15 minutes from downtown or the Crossroads area. You'll find ample opportunities to upskill through Allen College workshops and hospital-based simulations, and preceptorship-friendly teams help travelers integrate fast. Proximity to Cedar Falls, the University of Northern Iowa, and referral centers in Iowa City expands professional networking. Between shifts, miles of trails along the Cedar River make decompression easy and free.
Off shift, Waterloo delivers convenient amenities and genuine Midwestern culture. The RiverLoop public spaces tie together the Waterloo Center for the Arts, Phelps Youth Pavilion, and the amphitheatre, while SingleSpeed Brewing's Waterloo taproom and Galleria de Paco offer standout dining. Families love Lost Island Waterpark and the new Lost Island Theme Park, and hockey nights at Young Arena with the Waterloo Black Hawks are a blast. Fitness and childcare are easy at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex, shopping sits around Crossroads Center, and quick flights leave from Waterloo Regional Airport (ALO). Trails connect downtown to George Wyth State Park and the Cedar Valley Nature Trail for kayaking, biking, or birding. Only in Waterloo can you tour the John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum next to the still-operating Waterloo Works, where iconic Deere tractors have been built for generations. Nearby Cedar Falls' historic Main Street adds boutiques, coffee, and live music events.
