What are permanent remote jobs?

Permanent remote jobs are positions where employees work from a location outside of a traditional office on a long-term or indefinite basis. Unlike temporary remote work, these roles are designed to be remote for the foreseeable future, often with no expectation of returning to a physical office. Permanent remote jobs can be found in various industries, including technology, customer service, writing, and more. These positions offer flexibility and can allow employees to work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a permanent remote position, and why are they important?

Success in a permanent remote role requires strong self-motivation, time management, and the technical ability relevant to the specific job, often supported by previous remote work experience or relevant education. Familiarity with collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, project management systems like Asana or Trello, and secure remote access protocols is typically expected. Excellent written communication, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving help individuals stand out when working independently. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining productivity, effective teamwork, and accountability without in-person supervision.

Job description

Remote Quality Review Medical Assistant

Documentation Review for Veterans' Disability Claims

3-Month Federal Contract | W2, Non-Benefited | Fully Remote | 5 Openings

If you have hands-on medical assistant experience and you're ready for a change of pace, this role lets you put that clinical knowledge to work in a new way - reviewing medical documentation that supports Veterans' disability claims, instead of direct patient care. It's quality-focused, detail-driven work with a predictable Monday-Friday schedule and zero nights, weekends, or holidays.

This is a defined 3-month engagement, not a permanent position, and we want to be upfront about that from the start. It's a great fit if you're between roles, recently stepped back from clinical work, returning to the workforce, or simply looking for meaningful short-term contract work while your benefits are covered elsewhere.

AT A GLANCE

Pay Rate: $15.00-$18.00/hour. Your exact rate is set by the federal Service Contract Act wage determination for the county where you live, and will be confirmed during screening.

Contract Length: 3 months (approximately 13 weeks), with no guarantee of extension or conversion to a permanent role

Employment Type: W2 contract position; no benefits included

Location: Fully remote - must reside in and be eligible to work in the United States

Openings: 5 positions

Anticipated Start: July 27, 2026 (tentative)

Training: 5 days, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm Central Time. Mandatory, camera on, no absences.

Production Schedule: Choose one - 8:00 am-5:00 pm Central or 10:00 am-7:00 pm Central, Monday-Friday

Overtime: Voluntary, based on business need

Equipment Provided: Laptop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and headset

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is documentation review work, not direct patient care. You'll review medical records and supporting documentation submitted as part of Veterans' disability compensation claims, checking for completeness, accuracy, and consistency before a case moves forward. Roughly half of the role involves phone and email communication with Veterans and providers to gather or confirm information, so comfort with telephone-based work matters as much as clinical knowledge.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

- Review c-files, DBQs, and supporting medical documentation for accuracy and completeness ahead of disability exams

- Identify missing information, inconsistencies, or gaps in medical records and ancillary services documentation

- Interpret lab results and clinical documentation, including behavioral and psychological terminology

- Communicate by phone and email with Veterans and healthcare providers to clarify or collect information

- Maintain high accuracy in a metrics-driven, quality-focused environment

- Work within electronic medical records (EMR) systems and Microsoft Word to complete reviews

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) strongly preferred, OR vocational/technical training as a Medical Assistant, LPN, Health Information Technology professional, EMT, or military Medic/Corpsman, OR completed coursework in Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, Human Body Systems, and Common Diseases

- Working knowledge of medical, behavioral, and psychological terminology

- Ability to interpret medical documentation, lab results, and ancillary services information

- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word

- Typing speed of 40+ words per minute (tested prior to interview)

- U.S. citizenship

- Ability to pass a Public Trust background check (7-10 year lookback)

- Ability to pass a federal drug screening

- A dedicated, HIPAA-compliant home office with a door

- Hard-wired Ethernet with cable or fiber-optic internet - Wi-Fi-only, satellite, and mobile hotspot connections (including Starlink, T-Mobile Home Internet, and similar services) cannot be accommodated

- Availability for one of the two production shifts and all 5 training days with no absences

- No planned time off during the 13-week contract

NICE TO HAVE

- Multiple years of hands-on clinical experience as an active CMA

- Background in documentation review, quality assurance, audit, or clinical documentation improvement

- Behavioral health experience or documentation background

- Experience with disability claims, compensation exams, military healthcare, or VA care

- Home health or hospice experience

- Prior remote work experience and comfort with Microsoft Teams

GOOD FIT IF...

- You're looking for meaningful short-term or contract work right now rather than a permanent role

- You're between positions, recently retired from clinical practice, or returning to the workforce

- Your health coverage is already in place elsewhere (a spouse's plan, retiree coverage, VA, or Medicare), since this is a non-benefited W2 contract

- You're a military spouse accustomed to remote, portable, fixed-term work

- You want to use your clinical background in a meaningful way without being on your feet all day

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU APPLY

- This is a 3-month W2 contract with no benefits and no guarantee of extension or conversion to a permanent role

- This is documentation review work, not direct patient care

- Your pay rate within the $15.00-$18.00/hour range depends on the federal wage determination for your county of residence and will be confirmed during the screening process

- Training is mandatory, runs all 5 days with no absences, and requires your camera on throughout
