Job Title: Plastic CNC Lathe Operator (Contract)

Job Description

This contract role offers an opportunity for a skilled Plastic Lathe Machinist to set up, operate, and maintain CNC lathes to machine plastic components to precise specifications. You will work with a variety of engineering plastics, interpret technical drawings, and use precision measuring tools to ensure high-quality parts. The assignment is expected to run for at least four weeks, with a strong likelihood of extension based on workload and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC lathes to machine plastic parts according to engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, feeds, and speeds for various plastic materials to achieve optimal surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and written work instructions.
  • Measure and inspect parts using precision tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify that all dimensions meet specified tolerances.
  • Perform basic machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and routine checks to ensure reliable operation.
  • Perform tool changes and adjust offsets as needed to maintain part quality and consistency.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and make process adjustments to improve quality, efficiency, and throughput.
  • Deburr and finish parts as required to meet quality and cosmetic standards.
  • Document production data, inspection results, and any deviations in accordance with company procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with established safety policies and shop practices.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve machining issues and implement process improvements.
  • Handle low- to medium-volume, high-mix production runs, ensuring quick and accurate setup changes between jobs.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience operating lathes, preferably with a focus on machining plastic materials.
  • Proficiency in lathe operation, including setup and safe operation of manual or CNC lathes.
  • Experience operating CNC lathes, including familiarity with Haas or similar CNC equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T symbols.
  • Strong understanding of quality standards and inspection requirements for precision components.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
  • Ability to perform deburring and basic finishing operations on machined parts.
  • Capability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple jobs in a production environment.
  • Knowledge of shop safety practices and procedures, including safe operation of machine tools.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to approximately 50 pounds with or without assistance, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and visual acuity.
  • Comfort working in a manufacturing environment with machine noise and moving equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with tight-tolerance plastic machining and working to close dimensional requirements.
  • History in low- to medium-volume, high-mix manufacturing environments.
  • Technical or vocational training in machining, manufacturing technology, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with Haas CNC lathes or similar control systems.
  • Experience adjusting CNC programs or machining parameters to optimize quality and efficiency.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams.

Why Work Here?

You will join a professional manufacturing environment that values precision, safety, and continuous improvement. The contract structure offers flexibility while providing exposure to advanced plastic machining and CNC technology. You will work alongside experienced technical teams, gain hands-on experience with high-mix production, and contribute directly to delivering high-quality components. This role provides a solid platform to deepen your machining skills and build your experience in a supportive and safety-focused setting.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing shop environment centered around CNC lathe operations, including Haas or similar machines used for plastic machining. You will work around running machinery and typical shop noise, following established safety procedures and using appropriate personal protective equipment as required. The position involves standing for extended periods, performing repetitive yet precise manual tasks, and occasionally lifting up to approximately 50 pounds with or without assistance. You will work with precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges, and operate in a setting that emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and adherence to safety and quality standards. Work hours follow a structured production schedule, with expectations for reliability and punctuality in a hands-on, shop-floor environment.
