This role is part of our Hypersonics and Strategic Missile Defense business, which designs, develops, and delivers highly dependable missile systems for hypersonic and strategic missile defense missions. We provide integrated, mission-ready hardware that brings together multiple technologies into unified systems engineered to perform in demanding operational environments. Our tip-to-tail capabilities include payload protection and deployment systems, propulsion systems, aerodynamic interstage systems, separation systems, missile subsystems, shroud systems, launch systems, and payload integration solutions.

As a Lead Machinist, you support the Machine Shop Supervisor by coordinating production priorities, mentoring machinists, and ensuring precision components are machined to exact specifications. You help drive production quality, resolve issues collaboratively, and maintain organized workflows that support reliable output for mission-critical hardware.

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains Computer Numerical Control (CNC) lathe machines to produce accurate parts.
• Reviews drawings, blueprints, sketches, instructions, and samples to ensure machining meets specifications.
• Performs precise measurements using tools such as calipers, micrometers (mics), height gages, and other standard SMI instruments.
• Sets up machining jobs, selects appropriate tooling, and adjusts machine settings for efficient production.
• Monitors machining operations, adjusting feeds and other parameters as needed, and verifies results for accuracy.
• Inspects finished products for quality assurance and documents or discards defects when necessary.
• Performs routine machine maintenance and minor repairs to sustain operational performance.
• Supports staffing prioritization and coordinates with the Machine Shop Supervisor and team leads to meet production schedules.
• Reports quality, process, equipment, material, or labor concerns to the Machine Shop Supervisor.
• Collaborates with technicians, manufacturing engineering, production supervision, program managers, planners, and materials/warehouse teams to resolve production issues.
• Trains and mentors new team members while promoting safe work practices and maintaining a clean, organized workstation.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year of experience as a lathe operator or technician.
• Ability to read, speak, and write in English.
• Experience setting up and operating Computer Numerical Control (CNC) lathes.
• Excellent coordination and mechanical skills.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.
• Solid written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in math.
• Basic computer skills.
• Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD &T).
• Previous experience in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Conventional machining experience.
• Machining training.
• Experience with HAAS equipment.
• Composite experience.
• Programming experience.
• Experience in the aerospace industry.
