What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Permanent Mechanical Test Engineer, and why are they important?

A Permanent Mechanical Test Engineer typically needs a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, along with a strong understanding of mechanical systems, testing protocols, and data analysis. Familiarity with testing equipment, CAD software, and quality assurance standards such as ISO 9001 is commonly required, and certifications like Six Sigma can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective team communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills ensure the accurate evaluation of mechanical systems, support product reliability, and drive continuous improvement in engineering projects.

What does a Permanent Mechanical Test Engineer do?

A Permanent Mechanical Test Engineer is responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing tests on mechanical systems and components to ensure they meet specific standards and requirements. They work in a full-time, ongoing position rather than on a temporary contract. Their duties often include developing test procedures, troubleshooting issues, interpreting test data, and collaborating with design and production teams to improve product performance and reliability.

What is the difference between Permanent Mechanical Test Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectPermanent Mechanical Test EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, certifications in testing or quality assuranceBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, design certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, quality assurance departments, manufacturing facilitiesDesign studios, CAD labs, R&D departments
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, industrial equipmentProduct design, automotive, consumer electronics, machinery

The main difference between a Permanent Mechanical Test Engineer and a Mechanical Design Engineer lies in their focus: the former specializes in testing and quality assurance of mechanical components, while the latter concentrates on designing and developing new mechanical products. Both roles require a strong engineering background, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

What types of projects and teams will I typically work with as a Permanent Mechanical Test Engineer?

As a Permanent Mechanical Test Engineer, you'll often collaborate with cross-functional teams that include design engineers, manufacturing staff, and quality assurance specialists. Your projects may range from developing test plans for new prototypes to troubleshooting issues in production-ready components. Expect to work in both laboratory and workshop environments, where you'll set up and conduct mechanical tests, analyze data, and present findings. Regular communication with colleagues from different departments is key to ensuring that products meet performance and safety standards.

All our dedicated teams contribute to making cutting-edge technology possible. We value forward-thinking challengers, boundary-pushers, and diverse perspectives across all our departments, because we know we play a critical role in the world enabling faster progress for all. Learn how you can start or jumpstart your career with us.

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer with deep expertise in test development for Thermal Interface Materials (TIMs) and more general Heat Transfer Systems. In this role, you will lead the design, development, and validation of advanced test methodologies to characterize thermal, mechanical, and longterm reliability performance. You will collaborate closely with R&D, product engineering, and global test operations to deliver accurate, repeatable, and industryleading evaluation methods for nextgeneration heat transfer technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop advanced test methods to evaluate the thermal, mechanical, electrical, rheological, and reliability performance of heat transfer technologies.
  • Establish, optimize, and validate test protocols using equipment such as TIM testers, thermal test vehicles, thermal analyzers, mechanical compression systems, rheometers, and environmental chambers.
  • Develop and implement automated test sequences and instrument interfaces to improve testing throughput, repeatability, and data integrity.

Mechanical & Thermal Characterization

  • Lead thermomechanical modeling efforts to support test development and correlate laboratory results to realworld application conditions.
  • Evaluate interactions between TIMs and system interfaces, including heat spreaders, heat sinks, power modules, and IGBT/SiCbased packages.
  • Investigate anomalous or unexpected test results through rootcause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Analyze large and complex datasets to extract key performance metrics and establish statistical confidence in results.
  • Prepare highquality technical documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), engineering reports, and test specifications.
  • Partner with materials scientists, design engineers, and product managers to support material formulation and product development decisions.
  • Support customer validation testing and applicationspecific performance evaluations.
  • Transistor experience a plus.
  • Train laboratory technicians and global test teams on new test methods, equipment, and best practices.
  • Experience with phase-transition heat transfer technologies like heat pipes and vapor chambers is a plus.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of experience, or a Master's degree, in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • Handson experience in thermal and/or mechanical testing, preferably involving TIMs, polymers, adhesives, or electronic packaging materials.
  • Experience with thermal test systems, mechanical test equipment, and environmental or reliability testing.
  • Strong foundation in heat transfer, solid mechanics, and materials behavior.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical tools such as Python, MATLAB, Minitab, or equivalent.
