About the Job
General Summary of Position
Schedules all elective surgical procedures. Participates in preparation of perioperative schedules and entry of data in the computer system. Ensures surgeon's preferences and patients' needs match available OR resources by accurate scheduling. Functions as a frontline point of contact for all physicians' offices. Exhibits customer service skills. Demonstrates critical thinking in initiating solutions to scheduling issues.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Assists the specialty team leaders in preference card maintenance.
  • Assists with generating standard reports under direction of the Perioperative Business Manager.
  • Assists with ongoing communication and education processes for physicians' office staffs under the direction of Information Systems Manager.
  • Communicates appropriately to Perioperative Business Manager regarding supplies and equipment necessary for specific cases.
  • Communicates effectively with physician(s) and physician's office staff and all customers to schedule surgical cases within the perioperative services.
  • Ensures the accurate and appropriate scheduling of all cases performed within surgical services. Responsible for the daily case schedule and communicates any needs for scheduling modification and development.
  • Ensures the validity and efficiency of the schedule by careful checking of times procedures physicians (including availability of anesthesiologists) x-ray films and old charts before the schedule is duplicated and distributed.
  • Exhibits competency in computer skills and use of equipment needed in perioperative scheduling process.
  • Maintains patient and associate privacy and confidentiality.
  • Supports the establishment and execution of physician marketing strategies by providing efficient scheduling of cases and through excellent communication skills.
  • Uses budgeted resources (personnel supplies and equipment) judiciously to ensure efficient and cost effective operation of the department.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • High School Diploma or GED required or
    • Bachelor's degree equivalent; preferred and
    • strong knowledge of medical terminology. required
    Experience
    • 1-2 years Experience in an operating room or surgical office setting required
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • Problem-solving skills based on written departmental guidelines and criteria.
    • Data entry skills.
    • Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
    • Ability to work independently.
