How does a performance-based role typically measure and reward success?

In a performance-based role, success is generally measured using clearly defined metrics such as sales targets, client acquisition rates, or project completion outcomes. Employees are often evaluated at regular intervals, and compensation or bonuses are directly tied to achieving or exceeding these goals. Applicants should expect a results-driven environment where high performance is recognized with tangible rewards, but may also come with increased pressure to consistently meet objectives. Collaboration with other teams is common, as achieving targets may require cross-functional support and communication. It's important for candidates to be comfortable with accountability and to seek feedback regularly to ensure they are on track.

What is a performance-based job?

A performance-based job is one where compensation and advancement are primarily determined by an employee's results and productivity rather than fixed hours or salary. These roles often include sales, commission-based positions, or roles with targets that measure success, requiring skills in goal setting and self-motivation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a performance-based role?

To thrive as a Performance-Based Marketing Specialist, you need expertise in digital marketing strategies, data analysis, and a strong understanding of ROI-driven campaigns, typically supported by a degree in marketing or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, Facebook Ads Manager, and affiliate tracking platforms is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, adaptability, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure that campaigns are optimized for measurable results and that marketing investments directly contribute to business growth.

At AEI, you'll join a collaborative community where your expertise fuels innovation, your ideas drive progress, and your work helps shape a brighter future.
As a Building Performance Consultant II in our Madison office, you will help us empower our clients to achieve energy-efficient building solutions, save global environments, and create a better, greener future for all.
Why We Need You:
In this role, you will support the high performance design process through analysis of high performance design strategies and concepts, primarily through performance modeling; develop and optimize analytical tools and processes to provide timely, design-relevant insight to internal design teams, partners and clients. You will interpret and utilize information set forth in basis of design as well as information gathered from users, project partners, field surveys, and code research.
Expertise of our most successful Building Performance Consultant II:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or architectural engineering (or another engineering discipline) from an accredited program; or commensurate degree and experience with building systems.
  • Advanced understanding of building systems across disciplines and proven experience in at least one discipline such as HVAC, plumbing/piping, electrical, lighting, instrumentation and controls, or building envelope systems.
  • Advanced understanding of major tenets of high performance design including renewable and alternative energy strategies, daylighting, embodied energy, indoor environmental quality, material composition, water efficiency, life cycle assessment, and built environment planning.
  • Ability to use at least one building system simulation tool, including EnergyPlus, IES-VE, TRNSYS, DOE-2 (eQuest), TRACE, CFD, or Radiance, for consulting and analysis. Strong understanding and application of simulation tools for the appropriate systems and technologies.
  • Experience in computer operation for building system analysis and engineering calculation programs.
  • Proficiency in use of CAD/BIM software as necessary for building performance analysis and consulting.
  • Understanding of applicable rating systems, design codes and standards, and ability to interpret them.

Effective skills to help you flourish:
  • Industry certification or license applicable to building system design and performance including but not limited to LEED AP, ASHRAE HPDP, ASHRAE BEMP, ASHRAE BEAP, Green Globes Professional, or AEE CEM.
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE) or the ability to obtain the Professional Engineering license (PE) in one or more states.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn application programming language (C++, Ruby, Python, Visual Basic, etc.).
  • Understanding of applicable rating systems, design codes and standards, and ability to interpret them.
  • Strong spoken and written communications skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Quick technical comprehension and motivation focused on client outcomes.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Effective working individually and within team environments.

When you work here, you can expect:
  • A flexible, collaborative environment where your well-being matters-because your best work happens when you're supported.
  • Real opportunities to grow-through mentorship, professional development programs, and exposure to high-impact projects across disciplines.
  • To collaborate with inspiring teammates who challenge the status quo, foster innovation, and pave the way for future leaders.
  • A benefits package that offers health, dental, vision, and retirement, a performance-based year-end bonus, and thoughtful perks tailored to your needs-whether that's a flexible work environment, wellness resources, or community-focused initiatives, we'll continue to invest in.

If this dynamic environment and the chance to contribute to transformative projects resonate with your ambitions, we would love to connect with you. Join us and make an impact!
