What is a perception algorithm engineer?

A Perception Algorithm Engineer is a professional who develops algorithms that enable machines—such as autonomous vehicles or robots—to interpret and understand sensory data from their environment. This typically involves processing data from cameras, lidar, radar, and other sensors to identify objects, track movement, and understand surroundings. Perception Algorithm Engineers work with computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning techniques to create reliable and efficient perception systems. Their work is crucial in making machines aware of their surroundings and enabling them to respond appropriately. They often collaborate with hardware, software, and robotics teams to integrate their algorithms into real-world applications.

What are some common challenges faced by perception algorithm engineers when integrating their solutions into autonomous systems?

Perception Algorithm Engineers often encounter challenges when ensuring their algorithms perform reliably in diverse real-world environments, such as varying lighting, weather conditions, and sensor noise. Integrating algorithms with hardware requires close collaboration with robotics and systems engineering teams to optimize performance and latency. Additionally, balancing accuracy with computational efficiency is crucial, as perception modules must run in real time on embedded systems. Addressing these challenges involves rigorous testing, continuous model improvement, and effective cross-functional communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a perception algorithm engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perception Algorithm Engineer, you need a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and programming (typically C++ or Python), often supported by a degree in computer science, robotics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, and ROS, as well as experience with sensor data (e.g., LiDAR, cameras), is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are vital to develop robust perception systems that enable autonomous vehicles and robots to interpret and interact safely with complex real-world environments.

Location: Guntersville, AL | Full-Time | Senior Level

About the Role

Ready to drive the next generation of autonomous systems in smart manufacturing? We are seeking a highly skilled Senior IT Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and deployment of software solutions for our fleet of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) in Guntersville, AL. Serving as a key technical leader, you will split your time between driving strategic software initiatives in the office and troubleshooting complex systems hands-on on the factory floor. This role is critical for scaling our robotics operations, ensuring fleet reliability, and mentoring junior engineers.

What You’ll Do

As the subject matter expert for AMR software and system integration, you will lead the architecture and implementation of scalable software for our AMR fleet, making key design decisions across navigation, perception, and control systems. You will write core software components in C++ and Python—including algorithms for path planning, localization (SLAM), motion planning, and computer vision—while managing complex software projects from concept to completion.

A significant portion of your role will involve direct factory floor engagement: working alongside operations, maintenance, and automation teams to troubleshoot complex real‑time issues and resolve systemic interactions between AMRs and industrial equipment. Additionally, you will lead the integration of AMR software with enterprise platforms (MES, WMS, ERP), build data tools for fleet health monitoring, and mentor junior team members.

QualificationsWhat We’re Looking For

We are seeking candidates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related field, along with 5+ years of professional software engineering experience centered on robotics and automation systems. You must demonstrate expert‑level proficiency in C++ and Python, extensive experience with ROS (Robot Operating System), and deep expertise in designing complex software architectures. Essential technical background includes hands‑on work with Git, Linux, robotics simulation environments, industrial protocols, and industrial automation tools like PLCs and SCADA.

Preferred credentials include validated certifications in ROS or IEEE’s CSDP, experience leading engineering teams, and specialized certifications in cloud platforms, AI/ML, or cybersecurity for robotics.

What We Offer

We support our senior leadership with a competitive compensation package and comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance options. You will enjoy generous paid time off (PTO) and company‑recognized paid holidays to maintain a great work‑life balance. To help secure your long‑term financial future, we offer a robust 401(k) retirement plan with an immediate company match, alongside continuous opportunities for career growth within an expanding smart factory environment.

Work Environment & Travel

This position operates in a mixed environment spent across the active factory floor and an office setting, with light travel to affiliate locations expected at around 10%. Candidates must be comfortable working around moving machinery and maintain on‑call availability for critical operational issues.
