PER DIEM PAINTER (NIGHT)
Office of Facilities Management - Project Control

(Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Per Diem Painter (Night) within the Office of Facilities Management - Project Control.

DEFINITION: Under direction of a Crew Supervisor, applies paint, and other coating materials to various surfaces from ground level and/or scaffolds, platforms, and ladders at various heights, using brushes, rollers, and spray guns; follows accepted methods and uses proper materials and/or tools in order to prepare various surfaces for painting; cares for and cleans standard painting tools; does related work as required.

NOTE: Although not specifically outlined in the following list of tasks, certain jurisdictions occasionally require painters to measure, cut, and install panes of glass to replace broken windows and/or hang wallpaper. These not specifically outlined in the following list of tasks, may be considered as related work, but it is not normally required that candidates possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform them upon entering the position.

NOTE: Applicants not having the above experience may meet the requirements if they have a successful completion of an apprentice painting program approved by the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training. The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.


QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1.    Three (3) years of experience in work involving the painting and repainting of the interior and exterior of buildings and structures.
2.    Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

NOTE: Applicants not having the above experience may meet the requirements if they have the following: Successful completion of an apprentice painting program approved by the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training.


BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    May work alone or as a member of a team, on both indoor and outdoor assignments.
2.    Prepares surfaces utilizing various methods using sandpaper, wire brushes, or steel wool, and removes loose and old paint from surfaces using paint remover, scrapes, or wire brushes in order that the coating   material will   properly cover and adhere to the surface.
3.    Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, spackle, or other fillers in order to make a suitable surface for the finish coat.       
4.    Uses premixed paints or prepares paints to match specific colors by mixing required portions of tints and colorants in order to obtain proper colors, hues, and shades.
5.    Thins, stirs, and mixes paint according to specific directions in order to obtain proper consistency.
6.    Applies paint or other coating materials to various surfaces with brushes, rollers, and spray guns, and observes that the paint finish meets surface protection requirements.
7.    Applies various coating materials such as varnish, stain, shellac, lacquer or enamel using brushes and/or other related tools, methods and techniques in order to refinish cabinets, desks, chairs, or doors, or to decorate and protect interior or exterior surface, trim, and fixtures of buildings, and other structures.
8.    Paints various surfaces including cramped and hard to reach places, from ladders scaffolds, and platforms at varied heights, using brushes, rollers, or spray guns.
9.    Erects various types of scaffolding such as prefabricated metal or aluminum, wooden and/or swing stages (suspended by ropes or cables attached to roof hooks or outriggers), "A" ladders, window jacks, or ladder jacks, or ladder jacks by following standard methods in order to paint tall buildings and structures.
10.    Receives work orders from supervisory personnel through written and/or verbal instruction outlining the work to be done and methods to be used in order to accomplish the job according to specifications.
11.    Cleans and cares for various kinds of brushes, rollers, and other equipment using water, turpentine, paint thinner, or other cleaning materials in order to ensure that the tools are kept in good condition.
12.    In the Department of Corrections and the Juvenile Justice Commission, may be required to act as Team Leader and provide appropriate on-site work assignments to a group of assigned inmates/residents.
13.    Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.











KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

1.    Knowledge of the procedures used in preparing surfaces for painting.
2.    Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in general painting work. 
3.    Knowledge of the procedures involved in staining, vanishing, and refinishing cabinets, desks, chairs and other woodwork.
4.    Knowledge of procedures involved in thinning, mixing, and matching paint. 
5.    Knowledge of the procedures involved in the cleaning and caring for standard painting tools.
6.    Ability to understand, remember, and carry out verbal or written orders and assignments.
7.    Ability to putty, spackle, and fill holes and cracks where needed.
8.    Ability to work from various elevations. 
9.    Ability to rig scaffolding at various elevates.
10.    Ability to use the brush, roller, or spray method for application of paint. 
11.    Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
12.    Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
