Position:    School Nurse (RN) - Per Diem Substitute (Posting Number 2627-3762)
Location:   District Wide
Start Date:  As needed
 




We strongly welcome candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Must have a current NYS license as a Registered Professional Nurse
  • CPR/AED AHA or ARC current certification
  • Minimum three (3) years of hospital, outpatient clinic/office or Emergency Room experience
  • Possess knowledge of emergency care in injury and illness, injury/illness triage and treatment skills
  • Be able to dispense medication safely
  • Pediatric/adolescent experience preferred, Computer skills highly desirable


Job Description: Per Diem Substitute RN

Accountability

The substitute RN reports directly to the District Nurse Coordinator under the general direction of the school physician and the district appointed administrator.

Nature of the Position

The substitute RN performs a variety of duties necessary for the efficient operation of a school's health services under the direction of the Nurse Coordinator, Flex Nurse and/or School Nurse.  These duties include, but are not limited to, maintenance of cumulative health records, administration of first aid and emergency care for ill or injured  students, vision and hearing screenings, medication administration and documentation, and accompanying classes on field trips. The RN may also elect to sub for a consultant 1:1 RN and LPNs assigned to medically frail students during the school day.  This may or may not include riding the school bus to and from the student's home. The substitute RN performs her/his duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, the New York State Nurse Practice Act, and other federal, state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice as set forth by the New York State Health and Education Departments.  The substitute RN adheres to school district policies, regulations and practices and is under the direct supervision of the Nurse Coordinator.

Qualifications

  1. Holds a current license and registration as a Registered Professional Nurse granted by New York State Education Department.
  2. Holds current certification in CPR-AED BLS for Healthcare Professionals
  3. Demonstrates broad knowledge of health related issues in school age children. Demonstrates adequate proficiency in computer skills including but not limited to electronic medical records, email use, word processing and spreadsheet use.
  4. Communicates and works well with students, teachers, parents, staff and others in the community.
  5. Successfully carries out the medical orders and procedures prescribed by the healthcare provider as well as Individual Health Plans written by the RN.  Clarifies questions related to those orders as they arise.
  6. Demonstrates good observational skills, mental alertness, initiative, cheerfulness, patience, emotional stability and moral character.
  7. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Student Health

  1. Promotes safety and protects the optimal health status of children.
  2. Observes and evaluates student injury/illness concerns and documents such events.
  3. Follows established system for medication administration and documentation. Evaluates response to medication and alerts school nurse/parents/healthcare provider as appropriate.
  4. Maintains the integrity and security of health information, both manual and electronic.
  5. Consults with school nurse, physician, parents, and staff to evaluate the effectiveness of care.

Miscellaneous

  1. Provides emergency first aid care to staff
  2. Maintains confidentiality of health information
  3. Practices Universal Precautions at all times
  4. Maintains a professional atmosphere in the health office, classroom and on field trips

Employment:

Per-diem RNs substitute as needed for regular health office staff absences, including RNs, LPNs and Health Office Aides, and when contacted by the school nurse to accompany classroom field trips or assist with health screenings and other office duties. Salary is non-negotiable as per current contract.
