What is a per diem solar installer?

A Per Diem Solar Installer is a solar panel technician who works on a daily or short-term basis, often traveling to different job sites. These installers assist in assembling, mounting, and securing solar panels on rooftops or other structures. Since the role is per diem, it typically offers flexibility but may not include benefits like full-time positions. Workers in this position should have experience with electrical and construction tools, as well as the ability to work in various weather conditions. Some jobs may provide per diem allowances to cover travel and living expenses when working away from home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem solar installer?

To thrive as a Per Diem Solar Installer, you need hands-on experience with solar panel installation, knowledge of basic electrical systems, and physical fitness to perform manual labor, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with tools such as voltmeters, power drills, safety harnesses, and certifications like OSHA 10 or NABCEP Entry Level are typically sought after. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and excellent teamwork and communication skills set top candidates apart. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient installations and effective collaboration on dynamic job sites with variable schedules.

What is the typical work environment and schedule like for a per diem solar installer?

As a Per Diem Solar Installer, you’ll work on a flexible, as-needed basis, often supporting project teams during peak installation periods or when additional manpower is required. Most work is performed outdoors at residential or commercial sites, which means you'll need to adapt to changing weather and site conditions. Schedules can vary week to week, offering the potential for both part-time and full-time hours depending on project demand. You’ll frequently collaborate with other installers, electricians, and site supervisors to ensure safe and timely completion of solar installations.
