Job Description
The RN will work collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other members of the SU Health Services team to provide comprehensive clinical care for students' illnesses, injuries, immunizations and health education needs. Commonly performed clinical duties include obtaining vital signs and patient histories, physical assessment of the student, medication administration and injection, IV insertion/maintenance, specimen collection, telephone triage and in-person triage, sexual health screening and health education. In addition to the clinical duties, laboratory responsibilities include phlebotomy, specimen collection and point-of-care testing. The RN will be a per diem position reporting directly to the Nurse Manager. The Barnes Center at The Arch is open Monday through Friday 830a-5p and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm on a rotational basis.
Education and Experience
  • RN, licensed to practice in the state of New York.
  • Three (3) years experience as an RN, preferably in an ambulatory setting.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Primary care or College Health Office experience and phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • CPR certification required.

Responsibilities
  • Telephone and Walk-in Triage: Responding to student inquiries regarding their health and medication. Assessing patients that call on the telephone to for minor illnesses/injuries and providing care advice. Assessing patients via telephone for higher acuity illnesses/injuries and making the determination to schedule an appointment or send to local emergency room. Assessing patients who walk-in and require immediate assessment for higher acuity illnesses/injuries, nursing diagnosis and provide care advice, documenting clinical interactions in patient chart (EMR).
  • Nurse Visits: Administration of immunizations and specialty injections, teaching students to self-administer injections, wound care, suture/staple removal, ear lavage, nebulizer treatment, weight/vital sign checks, discussion of abnormal lab values, referrals to radiology. Review of order prior to administration, document accordingly in the EHR.
  • STI Clinic: Screening students in the RN based STI Clinic using the STI screening tool, ordering appropriate laboratory testing as per protocol, explaining test results, and providing sexual health education. Referral to provider and BHI as necessary.
  • Clinic Duties: Support primary care providers and other nurses by working collaboratively in rooming patients, obtaining patient histories, collecting vital signs, specimen collection and labeling, coordinating care (phone calls, appointment changes, referral assistance etc.), administering medications & injections with proper orders, documenting clinical interactions in patient chart (EMR), assisting providers with women's health visits or minor surgical procedures.
  • Point of care laboratory duties: perform CLIA waived laboratory testing on site, perform control testing for CLIA waived tests, occasional phlebotomy, entering lab results in EMR, stocking lab supplies, handling of specimens (including use of centrifuge), liaison to reference laboratory to assure timeliness of service and results.
  • Continuing education: Attend relevant on and off campus seminars, lectures, teaching days, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.
