Matheny is a special hospital for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities Matheny's mission is to provide exceptional care and an optimal quality of life for children and adults with special needs and medically complex developmental disabilities. Each patient has a primary nurse who coordinates all his/her care needs. Our nurses and nurse managers work closely with our paraprofessional care staff for on-going communication and teaching about each individual patient. The base pay rate for Per Diem Registered Nurses is $46.00 per hour.

Duties of this position include:

  • Demonstrates effective assessment skills by collecting and analyzing data, interviewing, observing, and examining patients, and by reviewing patients’ medical records.

  • Follows each patient’s individualized plan of care, monitors outcomes to treatments, and communicates issues with the patient’s primary nurse, as necessary.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills to determine appropriate nursing interventions and/or the need for collaboration with the physician or other clinicians.

  • Carries out all nursing/physician orders and documents nursing care and patient responses in accordance with hospital requirements.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in medication administration and applies the Five Rights to safeguard against medication errors.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in all fundamental nursing skills.

  • Applies CDC Infection Control Guidelines for Standard Precautions and Transmission-Based Precautions and monitors Infection Control practices within the work environment.

  • Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team by giving and receiving pertinent information to colleagues.

  • Maintains ongoing and timely communication with families/guardians on all patient-related issues.

  • Advocates effectively and ensures patient information is properly communicated when patients transition among healthcare professionals, both internally with the MCMD and externally with outside providers.

  • Demonstrates appropriate communication with patients taking into consideration their ages and functional levels.

  • Communicates effectively and follows up with direct care providers regarding patient care needs.

  • As a Registered Professional Nurse in a special hospital, performance of additional responsibilities not outlined in this job description may be required in an emergency situation. Additional assistance as a result of staff absences or shortages is also required, including additional weekend and/or holiday time.

Position Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university required. BSN preferred.

  • Licensed Registered Professional Nurse by the State of New Jersey Board of Nursing required.

  • Current CPR Certification required.

  • Registered Nurse, Specialty Certification preferred.
