What are per diem positions?

Per diem positions are jobs where employees work on an as-needed basis, rather than having a regular, full-time or part-time schedule. These roles are common in healthcare and other industries that require flexible staffing to meet fluctuating demands. Per diem workers are typically paid hourly or daily and may not receive benefits like health insurance or paid time off. This type of work offers flexibility for both the employer and the employee, making it ideal for those who want to control their own schedules.

How does scheduling typically work for per diem positions, and what level of flexibility can I expect?

Per diem positions offer a high degree of scheduling flexibility, as shifts are generally assigned based on immediate staffing needs and your own availability. Unlike full-time roles, per diem employees can often choose which shifts to accept, making it ideal for those needing a variable schedule. However, shift availability may fluctuate, so consistent communication with staffing coordinators is important. While this flexibility is a key benefit, it also means that guaranteed hours or benefits are less common than in permanent positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in per diem positions, and why are they important?

To thrive in Per Diem positions, you generally need relevant professional qualifications, applicable licensure or certifications, and experience in the specific field or role. Familiarity with scheduling systems, time management tools, and any necessary technical platforms used in the workplace is often required. Flexibility, adaptability, and strong communication skills are critical soft skills for success in these on-call or as-needed roles. These competencies allow Per Diem professionals to quickly integrate into new environments, deliver high-quality work, and meet the dynamic needs of employers.
