What is a per diem perfusion?

A Per Diem Perfusion job is a flexible, as-needed position where a perfusionist provides support for cardiovascular surgeries and other procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. These professionals operate heart-lung machines and other equipment to ensure proper circulation and oxygenation during surgery. Per diem roles typically offer higher hourly pay but do not include benefits like full-time positions. They are ideal for experienced perfusionists looking for additional income or flexible scheduling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem perfusionist?

To thrive as a Per Diem Perfusionist, you need in-depth knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, expertise in operating heart-lung machines, and completion of an accredited perfusion program with proper certification (such as CCP). Proficiency with extracorporeal circulation equipment, blood gas analyzers, and familiarity with hospital protocols is typically required. Strong critical thinking, adaptability, and effective communication help perfusionists perform well in dynamic, high-stakes surgical environments. These skills are vital for ensuring patient safety and seamless collaboration with surgical and anesthesiology teams during complex procedures.

What are the typical work hours and team dynamics for a per diem perfusionist?

Per Diem Perfusionists generally work on an as-needed basis, which often means irregular hours and the need to be available for urgent or scheduled cardiac surgeries. You will collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and OR staff, adapting quickly to different teams and protocols in various settings. This role offers variety in work environments and the chance to develop strong professional relationships across multiple hospitals or medical centers. The flexibility of per diem work can be appealing, but it also demands excellent time management and interpersonal skills to integrate smoothly with diverse surgical teams.

Where do per diem perfusionists make the most money?

Per diem perfusionists tend to earn higher wages in regions with a high volume of cardiac surgeries and specialized medical facilities, such as large metropolitan areas or regions with a high demand for healthcare services. Compensation can also be influenced by experience, certifications, and the complexity of cases handled, with some areas offering premium pay for travel or on-call work.
