What is a Per Diem Paramedic RN?

A Per Diem Paramedic RN is a registered nurse who is also trained and licensed as a paramedic, and works on an as-needed or 'per diem' basis. This role involves providing emergency medical care in pre-hospital and hospital settings, often filling shifts based on staffing needs rather than a fixed schedule. These professionals combine the advanced clinical skills of an RN with the field expertise of a paramedic, allowing them to deliver comprehensive patient care in a variety of emergency situations. Per diem positions offer flexibility but may not include benefits typically provided to full-time staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem Paramedic RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Paramedic RN, you need a strong clinical background in emergency care, an active RN license, and paramedic certification. Familiarity with advanced life support (ALS) equipment, prehospital electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) systems, and protocols is essential. Excellent decision-making, flexibility, and calm communication under pressure help you excel in unpredictable and high-stress environments. These skills ensure rapid, safe, and effective patient care when responding to diverse emergency situations.
