What is a per diem nursing assistant?

Per Diem Nursing Assistants are healthcare professionals who work on an as-needed basis rather than having a set schedule. They provide essential care to patients, such as assisting with daily activities, monitoring vital signs, and supporting nursing staff. Per diem positions offer flexibility, allowing nursing assistants to choose shifts that fit their availability, and are commonly used to fill staffing gaps in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare settings. This role is ideal for those who prefer a variable work schedule or need to balance other commitments.

How does working as a per diem nursing assistant differ from full-time or part-time positions?

As a Per Diem Nursing Assistant, you'll enjoy a flexible schedule, often choosing shifts based on your availability, which is ideal if you need work-life balance or are pursuing further education. However, this flexibility comes with the challenge of less predictable hours and income compared to full-time or part-time roles. You may work in various units or facilities, which requires adaptability and strong communication skills to integrate quickly into new teams. Additionally, per diem roles may not always offer the same benefits as permanent positions, but they provide valuable experience and networking opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem nursing assistant?

To thrive as a Per Diem Nursing Assistant, you need solid patient care skills, basic medical knowledge, and typically a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, vital sign monitoring equipment, and facility-specific protocols is important. Adaptability, reliability, and strong interpersonal communication help you succeed in varying shifts and settings. These skills ensure quality patient support, seamless integration with healthcare teams, and flexibility to meet dynamic staffing needs.
