How much do per diem neurosurgeon jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for per diem neurosurgeon in the United States is $291,565.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $250,000.00 and $394,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a per diem neurosurgeon?

A per diem neurosurgeon is a highly trained medical doctor who specializes in performing surgeries on the brain, spine, and nervous system, but works on an as-needed or temporary basis rather than as a full-time employee. Hospitals or clinics hire per diem neurosurgeons to fill staffing gaps, cover for absent staff, or handle increased patient demand. These surgeons may work in different locations and have flexible schedules, often being compensated at a higher hourly rate due to the lack of benefits and job security that full-time positions offer.

How does a per diem neurosurgeon's workflow and schedule typically differ from a full-time neurosurgeon?

As a per diem neurosurgeon, you will generally have more flexibility in your schedule, taking on shifts or cases as needed rather than adhering to a standard full-time roster. This can mean working at multiple hospitals or filling in for colleagues during peak times or absences. However, the unpredictability of cases and hours can be a challenge, requiring adaptability and strong organizational skills. Per diem neurosurgeons often collaborate closely with hospital staff and full-time neurosurgical teams to ensure continuity of patient care, and they may have fewer administrative duties compared to permanent staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem neurosurgeon, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Neurosurgeon, you need extensive training in neurosurgery, board certification, and a valid medical license. Proficiency with surgical microscopes, neuro-navigation systems, and electronic medical records is typically required. Excellent decision-making, adaptability, and strong interpersonal skills are crucial for working in diverse clinical environments and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure safe, effective surgical care and the ability to respond to complex neurological emergencies on a flexible, as-needed basis.
