What is a Per Diem MFT?

A Per Diem MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist) is a licensed mental health professional who works on an as-needed or on-call basis, rather than a set full-time or part-time schedule. Per diem therapists provide counseling and support to individuals, couples, and families, typically filling in for staff shortages, covering busy periods, or providing specialized services. This flexible role allows MFTs to choose their hours and work with various organizations or clients. Per diem positions are common in hospitals, clinics, and community mental health centers, offering both therapists and employers flexible staffing solutions.

What is the highest paying per diem job?

Per diem mental health therapists, including licensed marriage and family therapists (MFTs), often earn higher hourly rates compared to other per diem healthcare roles due to specialized skills and certification requirements. Salaries can vary based on experience, location, and demand, with some positions paying over $100 per hour in high-demand areas. Factors such as licensure, expertise, and the setting influence compensation levels for per diem MFTs.

Per Diem Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) can earn around $10,000 per month through flexible, contract-based work, especially with experience and a strong client base. Other high-paying roles without a degree include sales, real estate, and certain skilled trades like plumbing or electrical work, which rely on experience, certifications, or licenses rather than formal degrees.

How does the scheduling flexibility of a Per Diem MFT impact workload and collaboration with the clinical team?

As a Per Diem Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), you often have the flexibility to choose your shifts or accept assignments based on your availability, which can provide a good work-life balance. However, this flexibility can also mean that your schedule may vary week to week, sometimes leading to less predictability in your caseload. Collaboration with the clinical team is still crucial; you’ll need to communicate effectively to stay updated on client progress and treatment plans, especially since you may not be present for every team meeting or client session. Many clinics support Per Diem MFTs with electronic health record systems and regular check-ins to ensure continuity of care and team cohesion.

What is the 3 month rule for jobs?

The 3 month rule for a Per Diem MFT typically refers to the expectation that temporary or per diem mental health therapists work at least three months to establish consistent client care and meet licensing or credentialing requirements. Some employers or licensing boards may require a minimum duration to ensure adequate experience and compliance with employment policies. It is important to review specific employer policies and licensing regulations for precise details.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem MFT, you need a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field, state licensure, and strong clinical assessment and therapeutic intervention skills. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), telehealth platforms, and evidence-based therapy modalities is often required. Excellent interpersonal communication, empathy, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for building trust and addressing diverse client needs in varied settings. These competencies ensure effective, flexible care delivery and support positive outcomes for individuals and families seeking therapy on a per diem basis.
