Job description

Field Water Meter Installer

We’re looking for someone self-motivated, with a strong work ethic, who works well with minimal supervision across a range of environments and in inclement weather.

You’ll be based on one project at a time. When a project is completed or changes status, you may be reassigned to another job site in the continental United States.

As a Meter Installer, you’ll check, replace, and test water, electric, and gas meters. We train you on the job, and previous field or utility installation experience is a plus.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

UMS built a Pay-for-Performance structure to reward strong performers.

You’ll earn a minimum of $15 per hour on any project or location, plus a Production-Based Incentive on each paycheck. That incentive is tied directly to your performance (the number of meters and ancillary items you properly install).

  • Monday- Friday workweek + possible weekends
  • Weekly Paycheck
  • Real opportunities to grow and advance within the company

At UMS, we value hard work, and we know benefits matter when you’re deciding where to build your career. After 30 days of service, you’re eligible for our Comprehensive Benefits Program:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life and AD&D coverage
  • 401(k) with company match

THE POSITION

Our best technicians are dependable, hard-working, and mechanically inclined.

As part of our AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) Meter Installation Team, you will be expected to:

  • Install, replace, and remove meters, and flush lines.
  • Install and activate transmitters, using project-specific tools within specifications.
  • Replace meter box lids to meet AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) requirements.
  • Verify the proper orientation of each new meter and carry out tests to make sure the new meter is working.
  • Communicate with customers clearly and professionally.
  • Restore customer property after work is complete (including laying or replacing sod in yards) and make any repairs needed.
  • Ensure the meter is attached to the proper address/account.
  • Input data/findings into the tablet; troubleshoot the device as needed.
  • Maintain records of work performed such as jobs completed, labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Load and unload equipment, supplies, tools, and materials.
  • Assist with and use various other types of equipment or supplies, including but not limited to vacuum trucks, valve trucks, forklifts, portable pumps, and more.
  • Report to the shop/Conex at the beginning of every shift.
  • Follow UMS safety procedures and utilize safety equipment (provided by the company)
  • Follow UMS standards of meter replacement productivity and quality of work.

Expect ongoing feedback from your supervisor to help you improve performance, production, and quality.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have and maintain proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Must pass drug screening and background check.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude.
  • Comfortable working in heat, dirt, and tight spaces.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs., bend and stoop repetitively, kneel, and work outdoors in all weather conditions and environments.
  • Must supply your own basic hand tools.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a crew.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work all required shifts.
  • Committed to meeting safety, productivity, and quality standards.
  • Organized and detail-oriented.
  • Dependable, with strong attendance.
