What is a per diem interventional radiology RN?

A Per Diem Interventional Radiology RN is a registered nurse who works on an as-needed basis in the interventional radiology department. Their primary responsibilities include assisting with minimally invasive procedures, monitoring patients before, during, and after interventions, and providing specialized care in a fast-paced, procedural environment. Per diem positions offer flexible scheduling, allowing nurses to select shifts based on department needs and their availability. This role requires strong clinical skills, adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively with physicians and technologists.

How does the per diem schedule impact the responsibilities and workflow of an interventional radiology RN?

As a Per Diem Interventional Radiology RN, your schedule will be more flexible compared to full-time staff, but you’ll still be expected to quickly adapt to varying procedures and patient needs. Per diem nurses often cover shifts during staff shortages or high case volumes, which means you'll need to be comfortable with changing teams and workflows. Strong communication and the ability to collaborate efficiently with radiologists, technologists, and other nursing staff are essential. Additionally, you may be required to remain on-call for emergencies, so adaptability and up-to-date familiarity with department protocols are key.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem interventional radiology RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Interventional Radiology RN, you need a solid clinical background in nursing, advanced knowledge of radiologic procedures, and an active RN license, often with certifications like BLS and ACLS. Familiarity with imaging equipment, sterile techniques, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Outstanding critical thinking, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills, especially when working in high-acuity or rapidly changing environments. These competencies ensure safe patient care, smooth procedural workflows, and the ability to respond effectively to urgent situations.
