What is a per diem instructor?

A per diem instructor is an educator who works on an as-needed basis rather than as a full-time or part-time employee. They are typically hired to fill in for absent staff, teach specific courses, or provide instruction during peak periods. Per diem instructors are paid a daily rate and have flexible schedules, which makes this role ideal for those seeking variety or supplementary income. Their responsibilities and hours can vary widely depending on the employer's needs and the subject matter.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Instructor, you generally need subject matter expertise, teaching experience, and at least a bachelor's degree in the relevant field. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) like Blackboard or Canvas and, in some cases, professional certifications are typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and organizational skills help instructors engage diverse learners and manage variable schedules. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering effective instruction and maintaining high educational standards in flexible, on-demand teaching roles.

How is scheduling typically managed for a per diem instructor, and what level of flexibility can I expect?

Per Diem Instructors usually have highly flexible and variable schedules, as they are called in to work based on institutional needs. Assignments may be offered on short notice, and hours can fluctuate from week to week, depending on enrollment, coverage needs, or special events. This role is ideal for those who value adaptability and are comfortable balancing changing workloads. However, it's important to proactively communicate your availability with scheduling coordinators to maximize teaching opportunities.
