Work Study PPOE Outreach and Peer Assistant
Position Description
The BSU Observatory is dedicated to educating and sparking an interest in science, particularly astronomy, in the regional community.
The Observatory is looking for Outreach Presenters to:
  • Set up, break down, and run telescopes
  • Find objects in the sky to view through telescopes
  • Discuss astronomy with visitors
  • Give tours of bright stars and constellations
  • Assist with activities for K-12 students
  • Other duties as assigned

The Physics, Photonics, and Optical Engineering Department is looking for students to be peer learning assistants in various PPOE classes.
Eligibility requirements:
  • Must be a Bridgewater State University undergraduate student registered for a minimum of six credits for the Fall 2026 semester.
  • Must have Work Study award in your financial aid package

Preferred Qualifications
Requirements:
  • Works well with peers and colleagues
  • Is responsible and communicative
  • Night availability (for observatory)
  • Willingness to speak to a public audience (for observatory)
  • Willingness to learn specialized astronomy skills (for observatory)
  • Enthusiasm for astronomy (for observatory)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Good speaking skills
  • Comfortable around electronic equipment
  • Interest in teaching

Physical Demands
For observatory: Some lifting of equipment ranging from 10-50 lbs depending on the telescope and mount. Sometimes dealing with cold weather, hot weather, wind or mosquitoes.
