What is pediatric neurosurgery?

Pediatric neurosurgery is a specialized field of medicine focused on the surgical treatment of neurological disorders in infants, children, and adolescents. Pediatric neurosurgeons diagnose and treat conditions such as brain tumors, congenital brain and spinal cord malformations, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, and traumatic injuries to the nervous system. These specialists work closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care tailored to the unique needs of young patients and their families. Their expertise ensures the best possible outcomes for children with complex neurological conditions.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by pediatric neurosurgeons in their daily practice?

Pediatric neurosurgeons often face the challenge of treating complex neurological conditions in children whose bodies and brains are still developing. This requires balancing surgical intervention with the potential long-term effects on growth and cognitive development. Additionally, pediatric neurosurgeons work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including pediatricians, neurologists, and rehabilitation specialists, to ensure comprehensive care. Communication with families is also a key aspect, as explaining procedures and outcomes to parents requires empathy and clarity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pediatric neurosurgeon, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pediatric Neurosurgeon, you need an extensive background in medicine, completion of a neurosurgery residency and pediatric neurosurgery fellowship, and a valid medical license with board certification. Mastery of advanced surgical tools, neuroimaging systems, and operating room technologies is crucial in this highly specialized field. Exceptional problem-solving, attention to detail, and compassionate communication with young patients and their families are vital soft skills. These combined abilities ensure the safe, precise treatment of complex neurological conditions in children and foster trust and positive outcomes.

What is the difference between Pediatric Neurosurgery vs Pediatric Neurology?

Pediatric Neurology primarily involves diagnosing and managing neurological disorders through non-surgical means. Both roles require specialized training and work within pediatric healthcare settings, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

When you join us, youโ€™ll become a part of a nationally recognized health system dedicated to our mission of โ€œhelping people live the healthiest lives possible.โ€
Help build the future of pediatric neurosurgery in Nevada. As one of our foundational pediatric neurosurgeons, youโ€™ll have a unique opportunity to shape clinical programs, drive growth, and help develop Nevada's first freestanding children's hospital while providing highly specialized care to a rapidly growing pediatric population.

About this role:

As a Pediatric Neurosurgeon with Intermountain Health, you will work with a team of healthcare professionals committed to providing quality care and excellent patient experience.

  • Youโ€™ll join Intermountain Nevada Childrenโ€™s Pediatric Neurosurgery team, initially as one of two full time pediatric neurosurgeons. Youโ€™ll collaborate with an established APP, supported by collegial staff and leadership.
  • All of your clinic, surgical and call responsibilities will be conveniently located on one hospital campus.
  • Sustainable call rotation, with additional compensation for supplemental coverage.
  • Youโ€™ll be eligible for an adjunct faculty appointment with the University of Utah Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, consistently recognized as a top pediatric neurosurgical program.
  • While not required, opportunity for leadership and research roles will exist over time.

Intermountain Health is investing in Nevada's future with a new 200-bed Children's Hospital that will become the region's destination for complex pediatric care. Pediatric Neurosurgery is a cornerstone specialty of this vision, creating significant opportunities for program growth, innovation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and clinical leadership.

This is a rare opportunity to shape a growing pediatric neuroscience program at a pivotal moment. The incoming surgeon will have a meaningful voice in strategic planning, program development, clinical pathways, recruitment, and the future growth of pediatric neurosurgical services throughout the region.

  • ACGME accredited residency training in Neurological Surgery, and fellowship training in Pediatric Neurosurgery
  • Board certification or eligibility in Pediatric Neurosurgery
  • Active, unobstructed Nevada medical license, or the ability to obtain one
  • Federal DEA Registration
  • BLS certification
  • Ability to successfully complete Intermountain Healthโ€™s credentialing process
  • All general and sub-specialty interests welcomed.
  • Visa candidates will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
