Job description

Position Summary
Conducts experiments and processes data in a Surgical Oncology research laboratory.  Tests and evaluates current procedures and assists in judging the validity of experimental data obtained.  Collaborates with other researchers in the laboratory.  The qualified candidate will have previous experience in scientific research.


Position Responsibilities

Perform molecular biology research including:  DNA/RNA/protein extraction, PCR, qPCR, Western Blots, cell transfection, cloning, ELISA, DNA/RNA sequencing, immunofluorescence, microscopy.

Establish and maintain mammalian tumor cells and cell lines in tissue culture including preparing required media, additives, glassware and instruments.  

Assists with small animal models (mice) as needed including: surgery, primary cell isolation, tissue preservation/processing, immunohistochemistry.

Perform media research for current literature regarding methods and trends on specified topics, evaluate the methods and trends found in the literature, and then prepare research reports and documents from the literature searches.      

Collect and record data to support research findings and as required by study protocol.  

Performs computer-assisted data analysis.

Prepares graphs and other illustrations to facilitate the interpretation of research findings.

Prepares reports of results for principal investigator.

Manage daily workload and priorities related to research including preservation of equipment, specimens, and data.  

Works with the PI and senior laboratory members to manage the day-to-day activities of the study including problem solving, communication, and protocol management.

Maintain effective and ongoing communication with the PI and research associates/supervisors throughout the study.  

Oversee the Grant Protocol and ensures compliance.

Develop, implement, and improve data collection procedures.

Maintain adequate inventory of study supplies and materials.

Assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of any necessary equipment.

Adhere to all regulatory and safety guidelines.

Complete study documentation and maintain study files in accordance with study requirements.

Prepare data for analysis and assist in research.

Collect and track data related to research processes and outcomes.  

Share data and findings with the PI and supporting faculty at weekly laboratory meetings.

Assist the PI in documenting compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines.  

Work with PI to perform regular maintenance on all laboratory and facility equipment.

Assist PI with regular inventory of supplies and creating a list of needed supplies.  

Have awareness of the research budget to ensure purchases are appropriate and fiscally responsible.

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Percent of Time: 100%, 40 hours per week
Schedule:  40 hour week with a 30 minute lunch
Location:  UI Main campus
Pay Grade:  3A

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in science or health science field related to study, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Proven interpersonal and organizational skills.

Experience working on multiple projects at a given time with some level of independent decision making and responsibility.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat.

Desired Qualifications

At least two years of laboratory experience specializing in mammalian cell culture, cellular biology, and/or genetics along with advanced course work or comparable on-the-job gained experience. Experience in cell biology, and molecular genetics are highly desirable.

Progressively responsible experience in laboratory bench research and computer usage.

Ability to physically manage a laboratory consisting of several benches, cell culture room, microscope room, -80 freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks.
