How much do pcb jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for pcb in California is $99,386.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,500.00 and $118,400.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a PCB?

A PCB (Printed Circuit Board) job typically involves designing, assembling, testing, and troubleshooting circuit boards used in electronic devices. Professionals in this field may work as PCB designers, engineers, or technicians, handling schematic layouts, component placement, and manufacturing processes. They use specialized software like Altium Designer or Eagle to create functional and efficient designs. PCB jobs are essential in industries such as consumer electronics, aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications. Skills in electronics, soldering, and CAD tools are often required for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the PCB position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Designer, you need strong knowledge of electronic circuit theory, PCB layout principles, and proficiency in CAD software such as Altium Designer or Eagle, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Expertise in tools like OrCAD, IPC standards certifications, and familiarity with manufacturing processes are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with engineering teams and addressing design constraints. These abilities are crucial for producing high-performance, manufacturable PCB designs that meet both technical specifications and project deadlines.

What are some typical responsibilities of a PCB designer during a product development cycle?

As a PCB Designer, your primary responsibilities include interpreting circuit schematics, developing multilayer PCB layouts, and ensuring adherence to design and manufacturing standards. You’ll regularly collaborate with electrical engineers to optimize component placement and routing, and with manufacturing teams to address DFM (Design for Manufacturability) concerns. Testing and troubleshooting prototypes are also part of the role, and you’ll often update designs based on feedback or evolving requirements. This collaborative workflow helps ensure the final product is reliable, cost-effective, and ready for mass production.

Job description

We are seeking a PCB Design & Validation Engineer to own the design of test/eval boards and lead validation of our high-speed optical transceivers. You will design the PCB platforms that enable development and characterization, with the opportunity to lead PCB design for the transceiver module itself. You will review transceiver requirements, develop validation plans, and execute them across all major subsystems: Ethernet SerDes, internal data pipeline, laser/modulator, mux/demux, and the MCU controller with EEPROM and I2C interfaces.

Key Responsibilities

PCB Design

  • Own schematic capture, component selection, and layout for test/eval boards, development platforms, and transceiver module PCBs
  • Design multi-layer, controlled-impedance boards with high-speed NRZ routing, mixed-signal considerations, and PDN design
  • Manage DRC, fab outputs (Gerbers, assembly drawings), vendor coordination; maintain schematic/footprint libraries

Validation & Characterization

  • Develop and execute validation plans covering silicon, module, and system-level testing with defined pass/fail criteria
  • Characterize SerDes performance (jitter, eye diagrams, BER, equalization) and validate data pipeline throughput across PVT corners
  • Validate optical subsystems (laser/modulator power, extinction ratio, wavelength stability; mux/demux isolation, insertion loss)
  • Test MCU firmware interactions, boot sequences, EEPROM integrity, I2C compliance, and CMIS register map implementation
  • Execute host interop testing, standards compliance (IEEE 802.3, CMIS, OIF), and reliability sequences (HTOL, thermal cycling)
  • Build test setups and Python automation; create data analysis pipelines; document procedures and results

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years in PCB design and/or hardware validation for high-speed digital/optical systems
  • Proficiency with PCB design tools (Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or equivalent); multi-layer boards with controlled impedance
  • Hands-on high-speed serial link validation: eye diagrams, BER testing, jitter analysis, S-parameters
  • Proficiency with lab instrumentation: real-time oscilloscopes, BERT, optical power meters, VNA, TDR
  • Understanding of transceiver architectures and subsystems (SerDes, TIA, driver, laser, modulator)
  • Python scripting for test automation; familiarity with I2C, SPI, and serial protocols
  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NRZ optical transceiver validation and silicon characterization across PVT corners
  • Familiarity with SI/PI simulation tools (HyperLynx, HFSS, ADS); flex-rigid or HDI PCB design experience
  • Experience with CMIS or similar management interfaces; Ethernet compliance testing
  • Knowledge of reliability testing methodologies (Telcordia, JEDEC) and FEC performance validation
  • Experience in a startup or fast-paced development environment
