What is a pcb testing job?

A PCB Testing job involves inspecting and evaluating printed circuit boards (PCBs) to ensure they meet quality, functionality, and safety standards. This includes conducting electrical tests, identifying defects, and troubleshooting issues using specialized equipment. PCB testers work with design and engineering teams to verify performance and suggest improvements. Their role is critical in industries like electronics, telecommunications, and automotive manufacturing.

What are the typical daily tasks and challenges faced by someone working in pcb testing?

As a PCB Testing professional, your typical day includes running diagnostic tests on printed circuit boards, interpreting test results, troubleshooting faults, and documenting findings. You may work closely with design engineers and production teams to resolve issues and implement corrective actions. One common challenge in this role is identifying and isolating complex or intermittent faults, often under tight production deadlines. Effective time management and communication with team members are essential, as your role directly impacts product quality and delivery timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the pcb testing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in PCB Testing, you need a solid understanding of electronics principles, attention to detail, and hands-on experience with testing equipment, typically supported by a diploma or degree in electronics or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, automated test equipment (ATE), and software platforms for test scripting is crucial, and certifications like IPC-A-610 can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you troubleshoot efficiently and document results. These competencies ensure accurate fault detection, minimize production errors, and facilitate smooth collaboration across engineering and manufacturing teams.

Job description

Join our fast‑paced and passionate team as a Senior PCB Layout Engineer 4. In this role, you will take ownership of complex PCB designs, collaborate closely with electrical and mechanical engineers, and help establish layout practices that support our mission and growth. This is a hands‑on position for an engineer who thrives in a dynamic startup environment, communicates clearly, and consistently delivers high‑quality layout work for high‑performance RF and mixed‑signal systems.

You’ll work independently on challenging designs to ensure best‑in‑class signal integrity, manufacturability, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work independently and collaboratively while maintaining clear communication with the project engineer, electrical designers, and cross‑functional teammates.
  • Work independently and collaboratively to ensure high performance and signal integrity for low-noise and RF designs.
  • Execute complex PCB layout tasks including stackup definition, routing strategy, placement optimization, and documentation.
  • Apply discipline, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills to ensure accuracy, data integrity, and adherence to company best practices.
  • Perform design reviews, incorporate feedback, and contribute to continuous improvement of layout processes.
  • Take initiative to grow technical competency through mentorship, curiosity, and exposure to new tools and technologies.

Requirements

  • This position requires access to export-controlled information. Employment is contingent upon the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, ECE, or a related field desired; equivalent experience considered.
  • 5 years of relevant PCB layout experience, ideally within a startup or high‑performance hardware environment.
  • Demonstrated experience laying out GHz RF, high‑speed digital, and mixed‑signal PCBs.
  • Experience with controlled‑impedance routing, differential pairs, and high‑frequency design constraints.
  • Experience using Altium Designer.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of PCB stackups, materials, and fabrication processes.
  • Ability to translate electrical schematics into optimized PCB layouts that meet performance, manufacturability, and reliability requirements.
  • Familiarity with analog and GHz RF layout best practices including grounding, shielding, isolation, and minimizing parasitics.
  • Knowledge of high‑speed digital layout concepts such as return‑path integrity, length matching, and crosstalk mitigation.
  • Ability to generate fabrication and assembly documentation including Gerbers, ODB++, and manufacturing notes.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform PCB placement and routing for RF, analog, and high‑speed digital circuits.
  • Define PCB stackups in collaboration with electrical and mechanical engineers.
  • Maintain schematic‑to‑layout consistency, including BOM alignment and revision control.
  • Generate fabrication and assembly packages and coordinate with PCB vendors to ensure high‑quality builds.
  • Conduct design rule checks (DRC), signal‑integrity‑aware layout reviews, and manufacturability assessments.
  • Perform bring‑up and testing activities by collaborating with electrical engineers and technicians.
  • Participate in root‑cause analysis for layout‑related failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Contribute to the development of internal layout standards, libraries, and workflows.

Startup Mindset:

  • You’re adaptable, resourceful, and comfortable wearing multiple hats.
  • You enjoy building processes and systems from the ground up.
  • You thrive in environments with ambiguity and rapid iteration.

Benefits

The expected annual salary range for this position is $140,000-$180,000.

As a full-time employee, you will be eligible for Monarch’s comprehensive benefits package, which includes:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • Fidelity 401(k) plan with 4% employer matching
  • 20 paid time off (PTO) days per year
  • 13 paid company holidays
