As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for pcb cam in the United States is $100,705.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $75,500.00 and $120,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a PCB CAM job?

A PCB CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) job involves preparing and optimizing PCB design files for manufacturing. CAM engineers check for design errors, apply design for manufacturability (DFM) rules, and generate files needed for production, such as Gerber files, drill data, and panelization layouts. They work closely with designers and manufacturers to ensure the PCB can be fabricated without issues. This role requires proficiency in CAM software like CAM350, GC-Prevue, or Altium and knowledge of PCB manufacturing processes.

What are some typical daily tasks and responsibilities of a PCB CAM Engineer?

As a PCB CAM Engineer, your daily tasks usually involve importing, analyzing, and optimizing PCB layout files while ensuring that all design specifications meet manufacturing requirements. You'll frequently use CAM software to edit data, perform design rule checks, and create manufacturing tool files for production. Collaboration is a key part of the role, as you will regularly communicate with PCB designers, engineers, and manufacturing teams to solve technical issues and clarify design intent. Additionally, you may be responsible for preparing documentation and ensuring quality standards are met throughout the process, which helps maintain smooth workflow and consistent product quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pcb Cam position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) Engineer, you need a solid understanding of PCB fabrication processes, design for manufacturability (DFM), and proficiency in reading electronic circuit schematics, often supported by a degree in electronics or a related field. Expertise with CAM software such as Genesis, Ucamco, or CAM350, as well as familiarity with Gerber and ODB++ data formats, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective collaboration with design and manufacturing teams will help you excel. These qualifications and qualities are crucial to ensure PCB designs are accurately and efficiently prepared for manufacturing, minimizing costly errors and optimizing production.

Job description

NSC Staffing has an immediate direct hire opportunity for PCB CAM Engineer SOP- Milwaukee, WI
Monday-Friday 7am-3:30pm
Pay range: $90,000 with flexibility based on experience and qualifications
The PCB CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) Engineer is responsible for the preparation, verification, and release of manufacturing data packages for printed circuit board fabrication. This role serves as the critical link between customer-supplied design data and the production floor, ensuring that all tooling, artwork, drill programs, and process instructions are accurate, manufacturable, and compliant with customer specifications and IPC standards.
This is a detail-oriented, technical position requiring close collaboration with Production Planning and Manufacturing departments across all fabrication processes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Customer Data Intake & Review
โ€ข Receive and process customer-supplied Gerber (RS-274X), ODB++, IPC-2581, and drill (Excellon) files
โ€ข Perform Design Rule Checks (DRC) to verify layer stackup, copper features, drill-to-copper clearances, annular ring, and trace/space minimums
โ€ข Identify and communicate Design for Manufacturability (DFM) issues to Sales and Engineering prior to job release
โ€ข Review customer netlists and perform electrical net comparisons to verify data integrity
โ€ข Ensure customer specifications (drawings, fab notes, IPC class) are captured and reflected in the job traveler
2. Tooling & Artwork Generation
โ€ข Build and optimize panelization layouts to maximize material utilization and meet production equipment requirements
โ€ข Generate and verify photoplot-ready artwork films for imaging (inner layers, outer layers, solder mask, legend)
โ€ข Apply and verify registration targets, tooling holes, coupons, and fiducials per job requirements
โ€ข Create and verify drill and rout programs (CNC Excellon format) for all drill operations
โ€ข Assign and document drill tool sizes, compensating for plating allowance on PTH features
โ€ข Generate controlled impedance layer assignments and document stack-up configurations
Required Qualifications
โ€ข Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
โ€ข 1-5 years of experience in PCB CAM engineering or PCB fabrication engineering
โ€ข Proficiency with CAM software (Genesis 2000, InCAM, Valor NPI, or equivalent)
โ€ข Working knowledge of Gerber (RS-274X), ODB++, Excellon drill format, and IPC-2581
โ€ข Understanding of PCB fabrication processes: imaging, etching, lamination, plating, drill, rout, solder mask, and legend
โ€ข Familiarity with IPC standards: IPC-2221, IPC-6012, IPC-A-600
โ€ข Permanent Resident of the United States.
โ€ข Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple active jobs simultaneously
