What is a PBM Implementation specialist?

A PBM Implementation specialist is a professional who manages and oversees the process of integrating pharmacy benefit management (PBM) services for clients, such as health plans or employers. Their role involves coordinating system setups, benefit configurations, and data transfers to ensure accurate and efficient delivery of prescription drug benefits. They work closely with internal teams and clients to understand requirements, resolve issues, and ensure a smooth transition to PBM services. Strong communication, project management, and technical skills are essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PBM Implementation specialist?

To thrive as a PBM Implementation Specialist, you need a solid understanding of pharmacy benefit management, project management skills, and familiarity with healthcare regulations, often supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Experience with PBM software platforms, data integration tools, and possibly certifications like PMP are highly valued. Outstanding problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are essential for ensuring seamless implementation of PBM solutions, minimizing errors, and maintaining compliance in a complex, regulated environment.

What are some common challenges faced during PBM implementation projects, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in PBM (Pharmacy Benefit Management) implementation is coordinating between multiple stakeholders, such as clients, vendors, and internal IT teams, to ensure accurate data integration and system configuration. To address these challenges, strong project management skills, clear communication, and a proactive approach to identifying potential risks are essential. Collaboration with cross-functional teams and maintaining detailed documentation can also help ensure a smooth implementation process.

Job description

About this role

This role supports a strategic Codal client in the virtual pharmacy space. You will partner with large healthcare systems and online/digital pharmacies to modernize how prescriptions are ordered, filled, adjudicated, and delivered. A working knowledge of the prescription (Rx) lifecycle, pharmacy benefit management (PBM), and healthcare insurance claims adjudication is essential, along with strong e-commerce and customer lifecycle experience. You will help shape digital pharmacy products that span patient acquisition, prescription intake and transfers, benefits verification, fulfillment, and ongoing process.

Who you'll be working with

We ideate, create, and coordinate. We analyze, strategize, organize, and prioritize. We bridge the communication channel between the client and our project team. We chart the course and navigate the product roadmap sprint by sprint. Some of us are product owners. Some of us are scrum masters. Many of us wear multiple hats and do whatever's needed to deliver successful projects.

What you'll be doing

Discovery & Strategy

  • Lead product discovery engagements for enterprise healthcare, pharmacy, and digital health clients from initial vision through delivery planning.
  • Drive workshops, stakeholder interviews, business process mapping, and MVP prioritization.
  • Map end-to-end digital pharmacy journeys, including patient onboarding, prescription intake and transfers, insurance eligibility and benefits verification, claims adjudication, refill and auto-refill programs, fulfillment, and medication delivery experiences.
  • Translate ambiguous business problems into scalable product strategies, capabilities, and implementation roadmaps.
  • Challenge client assumptions, identify product gaps, and recommend long-term platform solutions rather than simply documenting requirements.
  • Partner closely with Solution Architecture and Engineering to define scalable technical approaches while balancing business priorities.

Delivery Leadership

  • Own one or more complex product domains across a client assigned platform while independently driving roadmap execution from concept through release.
  • Translate pharmacy operations, PBM integrations, and regulatory requirements (including ePrescribing/eRx, NCPDP standards, pharmacy claims processing, and HIPAA compliance) into clear, actionable product requirements for engineering, design, and QA teams.
  • Produce high-quality PRDs, epics, user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, and feature documentation with minimal engineering rework.Break large initiatives into appropriately sized epics and stories that support predictable sprint planning and delivery.Develop a deep understanding of existing platform capabilities and proactively identify opportunities for reuse, simplification, and modernization.
  • Manage competing priorities while helping clients understand tradeoffs between scope, timelines, technical complexity, and business value.

Healthcare & Pharma Leadership

  • Serve as a product leader for digital pharmacy and healthcare transformation initiatives, including: Virtual Pharmacy, Digital Front Door, Patient Portals, Clinical Intake, Prescription Management, Provider Experiences
  • Help define reusable healthcare accelerators and best practices that can be leveraged across future Codal healthcare engagements.
  • Stay current on evolving healthcare technology trends, regulations, and digital care models.

What you'll need to be successful (Requirements)

  • 7-10+ years of Product Management experience.
  • Experience working within consulting, digital agency, or professional services organizations.
  • Experience in healthcare, life sciences, or pharma application modernization.
  • Working knowledge of the prescription (Rx) lifecycle, including prescription intake, clinical verification, insurance adjudication, dispensing workflows, fulfillment, and patient delivery.
  • Experience with healthcare interoperability and standards is highly desirable, including: FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR, ePrescribing.
  • Proven experience leading enterprise software products from discovery through delivery.
  • Experience owning complex enterprise backlogs with multiple engineering teams.
  • Strong experience writing high-quality PRDs, epics, user stories, acceptance criteria, and user flows.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently decompose complex initiatives into well-defined deliverables.
  • Excellent facilitation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical and systems-thinking mindset.
  • Comfortable working in rapidly changing environments with shifting priorities.

Bonus Points for these (Preferred Experience)

  • Healthcare or Life Sciences consulting experience.
  • Experience with Digital Health, Virtual Pharmacy, or Digital Front Door platforms.
  • Direct experience supporting online, specialty, or mail-order pharmacy operations, Pharmacy Management Systems (PMS), or EHR/EMR integrations.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy interoperability standards and networks including NCPDP SCRIPT, Surescripts, EPIC and pharmacy data exchange workflows.
  • Experience with medication adherence programs, refill automation, patient lifecycle marketing, and patient engagement platforms.
  • CSPO or similar Product Management certification.

Need another reason to hit the "apply" button?
