What does a payroll systems analyst do?

A Payroll Systems Analyst is responsible for managing, analyzing, and improving payroll software and systems within an organization. They ensure payroll processes are accurate, efficient, and compliant with regulations by configuring system settings, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with HR and finance teams. Their role often includes testing new system features, providing user support, and implementing updates to keep payroll operations running smoothly.

How does a payroll systems analyst typically interact with HR and Finance teams during payroll cycles?

A Payroll Systems Analyst plays a key collaborative role, working closely with both HR and Finance teams to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing. They gather and validate employee data from HR, troubleshoot discrepancies, and configure payroll system settings based on policy changes. Throughout the payroll cycle, they coordinate with Finance to reconcile payroll records, address compliance issues, and support audits. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the analyst often serves as a bridge between technical system requirements and departmental needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a payroll systems analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Payroll Systems Analyst, you need expertise in payroll processing, data analysis, and a solid understanding of HR and finance principles, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or information systems. Familiarity with payroll software (such as ADP, SAP, or Workday), Excel, and relevant certifications like FPC or CPP are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities help ensure accurate payroll operations and successful collaboration across departments. These skills are crucial for maintaining compliance, preventing payroll errors, and optimizing system performance within organizations.

Job description

Business Systems Analyst – Finance and Accounting
Company Corporate — Houston, TX 77054
Full Time

Description
TNT Crane & Rigging is seeking an IT Business Systems Analyst to support enterprise platform initiatives alongside broader shared service functions across Operations and IT. This role is the strategic bridge between Finance/Accounting operations and technology, translating requirements into scalable system configurations, standardized processes, and sustainable adoption – spanning Finance and Accounting as well as IT across the Corporate Enterprise.

The ideal candidate combines hands-on enterprise system experience (ERP/financial systems preferred) with genuine SQL query-writing proficiency (standard SQL and PostgreSQL), and understands the data governance, process optimization, and cross-functional coordination needed to execute Finance-focused system initiatives successfully. HR/Payroll systems exposure is a plus, not a focus area.

Key Responsibilities

Business Process Alignment & Systems Strategy
• Partner with Finance and Accounting leadership to gather, document, and validate business requirements, translating them into functional specifications and system solutions.
• Facilitate process harmonization across Finance, Accounting, and Operations to reduce redundancy and increase standardization.
• Support enterprise platform initiatives — system evaluations, vendor demos, fit-gap analysis, process mapping, requirements validation — with emphasis on financial/ERP systems.
• Serve as liaison between Finance/Accounting stakeholders and technical teams to ensure system functionality aligns with financial and operational objectives.
• Identify automation, reporting, and workflow optimization opportunities across Finance and shared service functions.

Data Stewardship & Data Quality
• Lead data cleansing, mapping, reconciliation, and master data governance across Finance, Accounting, and operational data domains.
• Define data standards, naming conventions, and governance policies with subject-matter experts.
• Perform data quality audits and coordinate remediation to ensure accuracy and integrity across GL, AP/AR, and related financial data.
• Support data validation, migration, and reconciliation tied to system implementations, upgrades, and enhancements.

Training & Change Enablement
• Design and deliver training materials — user guides, quick-reference docs, video walkthroughs, instructor-led sessions — in person and virtually.
• Serve as a trusted business systems resource supporting adoption and operational readiness.
• Support change management efforts tied to system enhancements and process transformation.

Stakeholder Engagement & Cross-Functional Coordination
• Build strong working relationships across Finance, Accounting, Operations, and IT to align technology initiatives with business priorities.
• Synthesize input from stakeholder groups to drive consensus on process standardization and system configuration decisions.
• Present status updates, findings, and business impact analyses to leadership in business-friendly language.
• Coordinate UAT cycles — documenting defects, tracking resolution through completion.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required
• Strong SQL proficiency — standard SQL and PostgreSQL — for data analysis, validation, reporting, and troubleshooting.
• Experience supporting enterprise business systems within Finance, Accounting, or shared service functions.
• Experience gathering business requirements and supporting system implementations, process improvement, and end-user adoption.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred
• Experience with cloud-based enterprise financial/ERP systems (Oracle, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar).
• Working knowledge of accounting principles and financial processes: GL, AP/AR, budgeting, payroll, reconciliations, financial reporting.
• Familiarity with data mapping, integrations, reporting tools, and ETL concepts.
• Prior experience in multi-entity, multi-location, or rapidly growing organizations undergoing systems modernization.
• General familiarity with HR/Payroll systems (HRIS, UKG, Paycom, or similar) and related processes — a plus, not a focus area.
• Crane rental industry experience is a plus.

Education & Certifications (Preferred, Not Required)
• Bachelor's degree in IT, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field.
• PMP, PMI-ACP, PRINCE2, CBAP, Lean/Six Sigma, or CPA/accounting coursework a plus.
Working Conditions
• Full-time, on-site position with occasional on-call responsibilities for system emergencies.
• Opportunities for growth and professional development within the company.

Visa Sponsorship
TNT Crane & Rigging is not sponsoring visas for this position at this time. Applicants must have authorization to work in the United States.
