Job description

SteerBridge Strategies is a modern technology company delivering innovative, mission-focused solutions to the U.S. Government and private sector. Leveraging deep expertise in federal acquisition, digital transformation, and emerging technologies, we deliver agile, commercial-grade capabilities that accelerate operational effectiveness and drive measurable mission success.
At the core of SteerBridge is our people-especially the veterans whose leadership, problem-solving mindset, and commitment to excellence elevate every project we support. We don't simply hire exceptional talent; we cultivate it, creating meaningful career pathways for veterans, military spouses, and professionals who share our passion for advancing technology and strengthening the missions we serve.
POSITION OVERVIEW
SteerBridge is seeking a Software Engineer to support SteerFi, a scalable, VA-integrated payments platform used to issue Secure Cards to Veterans. This role focuses on building and maintaining backend services that ingest VA beneficiary files, coordinate card issuance with banking and processing partners, and operate securely within a federal compliance environment (AWS GovCloud).
The engineer will work directly with architects, product owners, and compliance stakeholders to ensure the system reliably supports beneficiary file processing, card issuance workflows, third-party financial integrations, and auditability required for government payment systems.
Unlike a purely feature-delivery role, this position requires the ability to move fluidly between hands-on implementation and system design - someone who can both write production code and reason about the architecture, security, and compliance implications of a regulated payments system.
SteerBridge applies proven architectural patterns - service isolation, secure third-party integration boundaries, and infrastructure segmented for GovCloud versus commercial cloud - to structure, validate, and operationalize payments data. Engineering here ensures these patterns translate into a reliable, secure, and auditable platform for a high-consequence financial workflow serving Veterans.
This is a hybrid position based in Vienna, VA.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Platform Development
  • Design, build, and maintain automated reconciliation processes matching transaction records across the platform, issuing bank, and card processor
  • Develop and maintain integrations with third-party financial partners (issuing bank, card processor, card network) via REST APIs, SFTP files (and other file-based integrations), and webhook-based event handling.
  • Contribute to architecture decisions for shared services (e.g., integration servers) that isolate third-party dependencies from core GovCloud systems

Data Integrity and Financial Accuracy
  • Ensure accurate handling of file-based and API-based settlement data from banking and processing partners
  • Build safeguards against data loss, duplication, and processing errors
  • Support root-cause investigation when discrepancies arise in production

Systems and Compliance Collaboration
  • Work closely with engineers maintaining upstream systems (card issuance, VA file ingestion) to ensure reconciliation inputs are complete and correctly formatted
  • Partner with finance and compliance stakeholders to ensure reconciliation processes meet audit and reporting requirements
  • Support documentation of reconciliation logic and controls for security questionnaires and compliance packages (e.g., BCP/BIA)
  • Participate in backlog refinement and design reviews

Domain and Process Analysis
  • Analyze workflows to identify opportunities for automation and reduced manual review

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical and financial logic to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience integrating with third-party APIs, including authentication, webhooks, and event-driven architectures
  • Familiarity with AWS services (Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, Secrets Manager)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with payments, fintech, or card issuance platforms
  • Experience with financial reconciliation, ACH processing, or bank settlement systems
  • Experience with Figma or similar prototyping tools
  • Experience with AI as a tool for engineers (Claude, Copilot, Cursor, Lovable)
