Job description

We're glad you're considering applying to become an Emerald Youth JustLead Tutor.

Since 1991, Emerald Youth Foundation has worked to support Knoxville's youth and prepare generations of Godly community leaders. Emerald Youth has engaged more than 30,000 children and young adults in a variety of community programs over nearly three decades. Every year, Emerald Youth serves more than 3,000 children, teens and young adults in the heart of Knoxville through faith, learning and health programs.

Why do we need tutors?

Each year, students in our afterschool programs take the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessment to determine their academic strengths and needs. Emerald Youth strives to meet students' learning needs and help address learning gaps. This past school year, many of our students who were paired with tutors achieved greater academic growth, which is why we need you! While with their tutor, students would be able to work on specific reading and math skills with resources and content catered to their individual levels. This individualized instruction has great potential to help students make significant progress towards their learning goals and close the learning gap, helping them have the skills to be more successful and empowered.

If hired, where would I work?

Tutors would be placed at one of EY's JustLead program sites. EY's JustLead ministry is implemented through a network of more than 18 churches and faith-based organizations (FBOs) to raise up a large number of urban youth to love Jesus Christ and become effective leaders who help renew their communities. Structured and meaningful activities (i.e. academics, health, service-learning, discipleship, etc.) take place with young people at a church and FBO to achieve this holistic vision.

What will I do?

Tutors will work with students on reading and math goals, based on student needs and grade level. Tutoring in the elementary level will have a focus on reading. Tutoring at the middle school level will have a focus on math. Tutors will receive curriculum and resources to support their students, and training will be provided on how to utilize the curriculum. Tutoring resources and curriculum will be provided to tutors.

What are the hours?

Tutors will work 8-10 hours per week during our afterschool program hours of 3:00 - 6:00. Tutors should be able to work at least 3 or 4 days each week for 2-3 hours per day. Exact days and schedule per week will be determined based on candidate availability. Tutoring schedules with be aligned with site location schedules and student availability/needs.

What age group would I work with?

Tutors will be placed with 3 to 6 students attending elementary and/or middle school. One-to-one tutoring will be prioritized in most cases, to allow students to receive the individual support they need. In some cases, tutors may work with groups of 2 students. Placement will be determined based on review of candidate resume and responses to the application questions - as well as candidate availability.

What is the pay?

Tutors are paid $17.00 per hour.

When do the positions start?

Ideally, tutors will start with orientation and training the week of September 14th, and will begin in program the week of September 21st. However, some positions can start as early as the week of August 24th.

Is there an end date?

Yes, December 11, 2026

Are there any position requirements?

Be able to make the full school year commitment.

Be able to tutor in-person.

Demonstrate a desire to support the academic growth of urban elementary and middle school age youth.

Be able to build positive and meaningful relationships with youth

Coachability- receptive to feedback/coaching, willing to learn, embraces continuous improvement

Be currently enrolled in post-secondary education or a college graduate.

Have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have some teaching/tutoring experience, be enrolled in a teacher-preparation program or a program related to education

Experience with urban youth is a plus.

I'm interested, what do I do next?

Great! Please answer the application questions. We highly recommend you also attach your resume, if available. To be considered, please answer the questions completely and with detail. We will be in touch with you no longer than a week out from the time of application submission.
