Job Title: Excavator Operator

Job Description

This role involves operating a 335 excavator on a new construction site on the southwest side of the city, primarily loading rock trucks with material and supporting earthworks activities. You will perform routine maintenance on the equipment, assist with erosion control and retaining wall work, and contribute to safe and efficient site operations as part of a small field crew.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a 335 excavator to load rock trucks with dirt and other materials in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform routine maintenance on the excavator, including greasing points, checking oil and fluid levels, and ensuring the machine remains in good working order.
  • Set up, change, and secure bucket and other attachments as required for different tasks on site.
  • Support earthworks activities such as backfilling, grading, and general construction equipment operation as directed.
  • Work collaboratively with rock truck operators, the foreman, and other crew members to coordinate material movement and maintain steady production.
  • Assist with erosion control and erosion containment tasks as needed to support site stability and environmental compliance.
  • Contribute to retaining wall installation activities by operating equipment and handling materials as directed by supervision.
  • Operate additional equipment such as skid steer, Bobcat, backhoe, dozer, or loader when required and when qualified to do so.
  • Follow all site safety procedures and demonstrate safe work practices at all times.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment and promptly report any defects or maintenance needs to supervision.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area around the equipment and within the active construction zone.
  • Adapt to changing site conditions, directions, and priorities while maintaining productivity and quality of work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience operating a dozer in addition to excavators and other heavy equipment.
  • Previous experience working on large earthworks or civil construction projects.
  • Familiarity with working in a coordinated team environment with multiple operators and supervision.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with foreman, rock truck operators, and other crew members.
  • Ability to read and follow directions from supervisors regarding excavation, backfill, and material handling tasks.
  • Comfort working on sites located at the edge of the city, including travel to and from remote or partially developed areas.
  • Flexibility to continue on future projects based on performance and project needs.

Why Work Here?

You join a crew that offers consistent work in the Calgary area, with opportunities for overtime and extended hours for those who want to maximize their earnings. You receive weekly pay, along with accommodation and living-out allowance support when needed, helping to reduce out-of-pocket expenses while on assignment. Strong performers can secure continued work on future projects, creating a pathway to longer-term stability and ongoing development of heavy equipment skills.

Work Environment

You work as part of a field crew of approximately four contractors under site supervision, operating on a new outdoor construction site located on the southwest. The project includes one foreman and two rock truck operators working in tandem with the excavator operator to move material efficiently. You typically work 10–12 hours per day on a 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. shift, with overtime paid after 8 hours in a day or 44 hours in a week. The role is entirely outdoors in a heavy civil construction environment, involving exposure to changing weather conditions, uneven ground, and active equipment. You regularly operate a 335 excavator and may also work with skid steers, Bobcats, backhoes, loaders, and dozers as required.
