What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paving worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Paving Worker, you need experience in construction, understanding of paving materials and techniques, and physical stamina, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with heavy machinery such as asphalt pavers, rollers, and compactors, as well as safety certifications like OSHA training, is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills set outstanding paving workers apart. These qualifications ensure safe, high-quality, and efficient paving projects in demanding outdoor environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in paving roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in paving often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, managing tight project deadlines, and ensuring quality control on uneven surfaces. To address these, successful teams prioritize strong communication, thorough planning, and adherence to safety protocols. Additionally, ongoing training in new materials and techniques helps workers maintain efficiency and deliver durable, high-quality results. Asphalt Laborer

Company Overview

AC Moate Industries, Inc. is a well-established and reputable Washington-based asphalt maintenance and construction company. We take pride in delivering high-quality asphalt paving, repair, and pavement maintenance services throughout Oregon, Washington and Nevada. Our team is built on hard work, professionalism, safety, and a commitment to customer satisfaction.

Position Summary

AC Moate Industries is seeking motivated and dependable individuals to join our team as Asphalt Laborers. No prior asphalt experience is required—we are willing to train candidates who demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, performing hands-on work, learning a skilled trade, and building a long-term career in the asphalt paving and construction industry.

As an Asphalt Laborer, you will support asphalt paving and repair operations by assisting with site preparation, material placement, handwork, equipment setup, compaction, cleanup, and other general labor duties. You will work alongside experienced crew members, equipment operators, and foremen to complete projects safely, efficiently, and according to company quality standards.

Responsibilities

Asphalt Paving and Repair Operations

  • Assist with asphalt paving, patching, resurfacing, and pavement repair projects.
  • Shovel, rake, spread, and level hot-mix asphalt during placement.
  • Assist with handwork around edges, structures, curbs, drains, and other areas that cannot be completed by paving equipment.
  • Help prepare work areas by removing debris, damaged pavement, vegetation, and loose materials.
  • Assist with saw cutting, excavation, grading, and base preparation as directed.
  • Support compaction activities using plate compactors, jumping jacks, rollers, and other equipment when properly trained.
  • Follow project specifications and instructions from foremen to ensure smooth, properly graded, and high-quality finished surfaces.

Equipment and Material Handling

  • Load, unload, organize, and transport tools, materials, signs, and equipment.
  • Assist with setting up and cleaning job sites before, during, and after each project.
  • Help prepare equipment and tools for daily operations.
  • Clean asphalt residue and debris from tools and equipment.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition.
  • Immediately report equipment damage, mechanical issues, or safety concerns to a supervisor.

Traffic Control and Job-Site Safety

  • Assist with placing cones, barricades, signs, and other traffic-control devices.
  • Remain alert around moving vehicles, trucks, paving equipment, and heavy machinery.
  • Follow all company safety policies, job-site procedures, and supervisor instructions.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment, including high-visibility clothing, work boots, gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.

Teamwork and Productivity

  • Work effectively with laborers, drivers, equipment operators, foremen, and supervisors.
  • Communicate clearly when working around trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic throughout the workday.
  • Arrive on time and prepared for scheduled shifts.
  • Complete assigned tasks safely, efficiently, and with attention to detail.
  • Be willing to perform additional construction and pavement-maintenance duties as needed.

Customer Service

  • Represent AC Moate Industries professionally while working on customer properties.
  • Treat customers, coworkers, subcontractors, and members of the public respectfully.
  • Help maintain clean and orderly customer properties during and after construction.
  • Direct customer questions or concerns to the crew foreman or supervisor when appropriate.

Qualifications

  • No asphalt experience required—we will train the right candidate.
  • Previous asphalt, paving, concrete, construction, landscaping, or general labor experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, wet, dusty, and changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to work safely around hot asphalt, moving vehicles, and heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, shoveling, raking, bending, kneeling, walking, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to repeatedly lift and carry construction materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a crew.
  • Willingness to work early mornings, long shifts, nights, or weekends when project schedules require.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the designated reporting location.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred but not required.

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid training and opportunities for advancement.
  • Consistent work with a growing company.
  • Opportunity to learn asphalt paving, repair, equipment operation, and other skilled construction trades.
  • Career-growth opportunities for dependable employees who demonstrate leadership, safety, and quality workmanship.

If you are looking for a hands-on career where you can learn, grow, and advance, we encourage you to apply today. Join AC Moate Industries and become part of a team that takes pride in safely delivering high-quality asphalt paving and repair work throughout the Pacific Northwest.
