Job description

The Pattern Technician supports new product development activities through the development, modification, and validation of upholstery patterns for prototypes. The Pattern Technician is responsible for creating and refining fabric, vinyl, and leather patterns in accordance with engineering and design requirements, ensuring proper fit, appearance, manufacturability, and material utilization. The Pattern Technician also supports prototype builds, sample management, material preparation, and promotes SS principles while maintaining the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, quality, and efficiency.


Pattern Development & Validation

  • Develop, modify, and maintain fabric, vinyl, and leather patterns for prototype.
  • Create templates, sewing patterns, and cutting patterns in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and design requirements.
  • Determine and apply appropriate seam allowances, sewing notches, and material compensation requirements.
  • Conduct pattern fit evaluations and make adjustments to_ ensure proper fit, appearance, and manufacturability.
  • Support pattern grading, revisions, and engineering changes throughout the product development process.
  • Identify and communicate pattern, fit, sewing, or appearance issues and recommend corrective actions.

Prototype Development Support

  • Support prototype builds by preparing and supplying patterns, templates, and material kits.
  • Assist with upholstery evaluations and prototype modifications as required.
  • Prepare foam templates and perfor1n material preparation activities necessary for pattern validation.
  • Collaborate with Design, and Workshop personnel to resolve prototype development issues.

Sample & Material Management

  • Receive, inspect, and organize incoming fabrics, vinyls, leathers, foam, and development materials.
  • Maintain pattern files, templates, and sample inventories in an organized and controlled manner.
  • Ensure all patterns, templates, and materials are properly identified, stored, and protected from damage.
  • Coordinate the preparation and transfer of patterns and prototypes for testing and evaluation activities.


Safety, Quality & 5S

  • Follow safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment through adherence to SS principles.
  • Ensure all pattern development activities are completed in accordance with established quality standards.
  • Report safety concerns and equip1nent issues promptly.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to pattern development processes, quality, efficiency, and workplace organization.

Qualifications / Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in pattern making, upholstery, furniture manufacturing, industrial sewing, or a related field is an asset.
  • Experience in upholstery pattern develop1nent, furniture manufacturing, prototype development, or a related manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Understanding of upholstery construction methods, sewing techniques, and material characteristics including fabric, vinyl, and leather.
  • Knowledge of pattern development principles including stretch factors, seam allowances, pattern compensation, and fit validation.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and product development documentation.
  • Proficiency in pattern-making tools and equipment; CAD pattern software experience is an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
  • Good organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and support fast-paced product development activities.
  • Understanding of Workplace safety requirements and 5S principles.
