What is a Pattern Designer job?

A Pattern Designer creates templates or designs used for manufacturing textiles, clothing, or other patterned products. They work with software or manual drafting techniques to develop precise patterns that ensure proper fit and aesthetics. Pattern Designers collaborate with fashion designers, product developers, and manufacturers to refine designs. Their role requires technical skills in pattern-making, material knowledge, and attention to detail to achieve the desired look and function.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pattern Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in textile or fashion design, a keen eye for detail, and knowledge of fabric properties, often supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software like Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, or specialized pattern-making programs is commonly required. Creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills are important soft skills in this field. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate, innovative patterns that meet both design and production requirements in a fast-paced industry.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Pattern Designer on a daily basis?

Pattern Designers are responsible for creating, modifying, and testing patterns for garments or textiles, either by hand or using CAD software. Their daily tasks often include meeting with designers or product managers to discuss concepts, converting sketches into precise patterns, and collaborating with sample makers to ensure fit and quality. They may also assess pre-production samples and make necessary adjustments to improve manufacturability. Working with various departments, including production, design, and quality assurance, is common to ensure seamless workflow from concept to finished product. This collaborative environment enables Pattern Designers to contribute directly to the success of new fashion lines or textile products.

Job description

At Bumble, we exist to help people build healthy, equitable relationships and friendships - and the design system is one of the most powerful ways we bring that mission to life at scale. As a Senior Designer on our Design Systems team, you'll shape the foundations of Bumble's product experience, ensuring our interfaces feel intuitive, inclusive, and deeply human across iOS, Android, and web.
You'll treat the design system as a product in its own right: one that reflects our members' desired outcomes while making the right thing to do the easy thing to do for teams. Working in close partnership with product designers, engineers, research, and brand, you'll help embed Bumble values like Respect, Excellence, and Curiosity into the patterns and components used by millions of people every day. You'll also play an active role in using and supporting AI-powered workflows that help teams design and build with greater clarity, speed, and consistency.
What You'll Do
  • Design, evolve, and maintain system tokens, components, and patterns that are accessible, resilient, and scalable across platforms, championing inclusive design practices aligned with our value of Respect.
  • Audit existing product experiences to identify design debt, inconsistencies, and opportunities to improve system coverage, then take ownership of prioritising and delivering meaningful improvements.
  • Partner closely with engineering to ensure strong parity between Figma libraries and production code, collaborating through shared design-to-code workflows and AI-supported documentation practices.
  • Create clear, discoverable system documentation - including usage guidelines, do/don'ts, component states, motion, and error handling - that empowers teams to ship confidently and efficiently.
  • Advocate for safe-by-design and accessible patterns that reflect Bumble's commitment to kindness, safety, and equitable experiences for diverse members.
  • Support and onboard product teams adopting the design system, facilitating alignment sessions, and responding thoughtfully to system support requests.
  • Contribute to the design system's product strategy by helping define its vision, roadmap, and success metrics, including adoption, usability improvements, and reduced time-to-ship.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative feedback from designers, engineers, and members - alongside AI-assisted insights - to iterate, measure impact, and continuously improve the system with an agile mindset.

About You
  • You bring deep empathy for diverse users and consistently design with inclusion, accessibility, and safety at the forefront, reflecting Bumble's values of Respect and Courage.
  • You have strong experience designing and scaling component libraries, tokens, and patterns across multiple products or teams, balancing visual craft with usability and performance.
  • You're highly fluent in Figma, including components, variants, variable collections, libraries, and documentation workflows, and comfortable managing complex token systems (Tokens Studio experience is a plus).
  • You communicate clearly and collaboratively with designers and engineers, explaining trade-offs and rationale in a way that builds trust, alignment, and shared ownership.
  • You take ownership of your work end-to-end, collaborate with purpose across functions, and see ideas through from insight to impact, adapting plans with an agile mindset.
  • You're comfortable using AI-powered tools to support design exploration, documentation, and system maintenance, and you're curious about how AI can responsibly improve design system workflows over time.
  • Typically requires 7-9 years of experience using and maintaining or contributing to product design systems (frontend development is highly valued, though not a requirement or responsibility).
  • You're collaborative, low-ego, and excited to coach and elevate others across the organization.

$190,000 - $215,000 a year
