What is a pattern designer?

A Pattern Designer creates templates or designs used for manufacturing textiles, clothing, or other patterned products. They work with software or manual drafting techniques to develop precise patterns that ensure proper fit and aesthetics. Pattern Designers collaborate with fashion designers, product developers, and manufacturers to refine designs. Their role requires technical skills in pattern-making, material knowledge, and attention to detail to achieve the desired look and function.

What are the typical responsibilities of a pattern designer?

Pattern Designers are responsible for creating, modifying, and testing patterns for garments or textiles, either by hand or using CAD software. Their daily tasks often include meeting with designers or product managers to discuss concepts, converting sketches into precise patterns, and collaborating with sample makers to ensure fit and quality. They may also assess pre-production samples and make necessary adjustments to improve manufacturability. Working with various departments, including production, design, and quality assurance, is common to ensure seamless workflow from concept to finished product. This collaborative environment enables Pattern Designers to contribute directly to the success of new fashion lines or textile products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the pattern designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in textile or fashion design, a keen eye for detail, and knowledge of fabric properties, often supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software like Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, or specialized pattern-making programs is commonly required. Creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills are important soft skills in this field. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate, innovative patterns that meet both design and production requirements in a fast-paced industry.

How do you become a pattern designer?

To become a pattern designer, you typically need a background in fashion design, textile design, or a related field, along with skills in drawing, digital design software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, and knowledge of fabric and printing techniques. Building a portfolio of your work and gaining experience through internships or freelance projects can help establish your career. Many pattern designers also stay updated on industry trends and may pursue certifications to enhance their skills.

Job description

Zipliens is looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our team, shaping the product experiences that power the next generation of applications for the legal industry. After several years of high growth, Zipliens has become a leader in lien resolution, a process required in most personal injury settlements. The software we build supports the lien resolution work we perform on behalf of law firms, helping them operate more efficiently while ultimately enabling the injured parties they service to access settlement funds more quickly and completely - giving our work a clear, real-world impact beyond the design challenges.

We're hiring our first product designer to lead end-to-end design for core areas of our product, from concept through launch. You won't just be refining details - you'll be defining problems, mapping flows, and crafting the experiences our customers and Operations teams rely on every day. Your decisions will show up in what we ship, your voice will influence direction across product and engineering, and your craft will help set the standard for quality as we grow. At Zipliens, design is part of how we build - you'll be involved early, move quickly, and see your work used by real people. As our first design hire, you'll also have outsized influence on the Figma design system, the design practices, and the patterns that shape the team as it grows.

Requirements

Responsibilities:

Product Design & Craft

  • Lead end-to-end design for key product areas - discovery, wireframing, prototyping, and final UI.
  • Define user problems, map flows, and shape information architecture to create clear, usable experiences.
  • Iterate on designs based on user feedback, product analytics, and post-launch insights.
  • Help shape the design practices and conventions that set how design happens at Zipliens as the team grows.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner closely with product managers and engineers to translate requirements into intuitive, well-crafted experiences.
  • Conduct and synthesize user research to inform design decisions.
  • Work with Operations and other internal stakeholders to understand how the product is used and where it can serve them better.

Design System & Tooling

  • Build out and evolve our Figma design system - components, patterns, and conventions that scale with the product.
  • Leverage AI tools for ideation, content generation, and research synthesis - without losing the design thinking that makes the work good.
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of product/UX design experience, ideally in a SaaS or B2B environment.
  • Strong portfolio that demonstrates end-to-end product thinking, not just visual polish - including how you framed problems, made trade-offs, measured impact, and connected user needs to business outcomes.
  • Deep Figma proficiency - components, auto layout, prototyping, dev handoff, and AI-assisted features - with a habit of reaching for the right tool at the right time.
  • Solid grasp of UX fundamentals: information architecture, interaction design, accessibility.
  • Comfortable using product analytics tools to validate design decisions.
  • Experience designing scalable flows and patterns - including the edge cases that show up in complex products - and validating through testing and iteration.
  • Strong communication skills and a track record of explaining design choices and bringing cross-functional partners along.
  • Thrives in a fast-moving environment where priorities can shift, and structure is still being built.

Benefits

Benefits
  • Private Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Company HSA contributions for HDHP participants
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (Health & Dependent Care)
  • Company-Paid Short-Term Disability Coverage
  • Voluntary Long-Term Disability, Life, AD&D, and Supplemental Coverage Options
  • 401(k) Plan with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick Time & Select Holidays)
  • Paid Parental Leave

Pay Disclosure: The total base salary range for this role is $103,000 - $140,000 annually, with opportunity for a discretionary bonus. Final compensation will be determined based on skills and experience.

Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer-sponsored visa support now or in the future.
