Is AI taking over surface pattern design?

Pattern designers are increasingly using AI tools to generate ideas and assist in creating designs, but human creativity remains essential for originality and aesthetic judgment. AI can streamline workflows and inspire new patterns, but it does not fully replace the need for skilled designers who understand trends, client needs, and artistic nuances. Successful pattern designers often combine technical skills with creativity and knowledge of design software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pattern Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in textile or fashion design, a keen eye for detail, and knowledge of fabric properties, often supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software like Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, or specialized pattern-making programs is commonly required. Creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills are important soft skills in this field. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate, innovative patterns that meet both design and production requirements in a fast-paced industry.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Pattern Designer on a daily basis?

Pattern Designers are responsible for creating, modifying, and testing patterns for garments or textiles, either by hand or using CAD software. Their daily tasks often include meeting with designers or product managers to discuss concepts, converting sketches into precise patterns, and collaborating with sample makers to ensure fit and quality. They may also assess pre-production samples and make necessary adjustments to improve manufacturability. Working with various departments, including production, design, and quality assurance, is common to ensure seamless workflow from concept to finished product. This collaborative environment enables Pattern Designers to contribute directly to the success of new fashion lines or textile products.

How do you become a pattern designer?

To become a pattern designer, you typically need a background in fashion design, textile design, or a related field, along with strong skills in drawing, color theory, and digital design tools like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Building a portfolio of your work and gaining experience through internships or freelance projects can help you enter the industry and develop your style.

Is pattern making a good career?

Pattern making is a viable career within the fashion and apparel industry, involving creating templates for garment construction. It requires technical skills, knowledge of fabrics and tools like CAD software, and often offers opportunities for freelance or in-house work. Job stability and growth depend on industry demand and individual skill level.

What is a Pattern Designer job?

A Pattern Designer creates templates or designs used for manufacturing textiles, clothing, or other patterned products. They work with software or manual drafting techniques to develop precise patterns that ensure proper fit and aesthetics. Pattern Designers collaborate with fashion designers, product developers, and manufacturers to refine designs. Their role requires technical skills in pattern-making, material knowledge, and attention to detail to achieve the desired look and function.

Job description

About Creative Realities

Creative Realities, Inc. (www.cri.com, NASDAQ: CREX) is a creative technology company focusing on bringing digital experiences to retail environments, designed to enrich and inspire the consumer journey. Our strong design and strategic discipline uniquely position us to guide Fortune 100 Brands and Retailers on how best to apply technology in function of marketing, store, or customer objectives. Our end-to-end offering enables us to execute what we recommend: from design and app development, thought to deployment on site - and provide ongoing content and support to virtually any type of environment.

About the Position

As the foundational Senior Product Designer at Creative Realities, you will own the user experience for our next-generation, unified enterprise digital signage management platform. This is an exciting opportunity to design a unified software suite that simplifies complex orchestration into intuitive, high-impact workflows, directly influencing how our support teams and global clients drive value from their networks, and playing a critical role in CRI’s broader monetization and platform integration strategy.

You will operate at the intersection of design, product strategy, and technology. You will serve as a critical strategic partner to Product Management and Engineering, bringing a focus on CX and usability best practices to the core of our software development practices. You will own the entire lifecycle - includes creating modern interaction patterns, designing multi-step workflows, architecting design systems, and producing end-to-end UX deliverables—from research and wireframing to high-fidelity prototypes to architecting a scalable, enterprise-grade design system that empowers our engineering teams to scale efficiently.

In this role, you must possess a strong natural orientation for transforming sophisticated enterprise behaviors—such as device orchestration, multi-location hierarchies, advanced scheduling, metadata governance, and real-time analytics—into clear, frictionless, operator-friendly interfaces. To thrive, you will leverage a dual-approach to innovation: both pioneering AI-driven features that streamline user productivity within the product and utilizing AI-augmented design workflows to accelerate prototyping and drive exceptional outcomes across our Product and Engineering organization.

This is a senior individual contributor role for a builder who wants to shape the design foundation for a flagship enterprise platform. This position reports directly to the VP of Product Management.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a seasoned, systems-thinking Senior Product Designer who thrives on turning enterprise complexity into elegant, frictionless user experiences. You don't just design screens; you fundamentally understand how data, workflows, and business logic intersect to drive real-world value through enterprise tools.

As our primary product designer, you bring a practical, outcomes-oriented approach to your craft, taking a high degree of ownership and accountability over the entire design lifecycle. You excel at navigating cross-functional partnerships, collaborating as a peer with Product Management and Engineering to balance user needs with technical feasibility, and are adept at communicating design decisions clearly. Highly proficient in modern design workflows, you possess a deep curiosity for AI-augmented prototyping tools, cutting edge approaches to design systems which enable engineering efficiency, and a strong desire to design intelligent, AI-driven product features that make end-users more productive. Exposure to digital signage management is preferred but not required.

Key Responsibilities

Design Leadership

  • Own the end-to-end UX design process across our enterprise software platforms.
  • Translate business, client, and technical requirements into clear user journeys, workflows, and UI patterns.
  • Deliver wireframes, interactive prototypes, design specs, and polished UI for development handoff.

Design Systems & Architecture

  • Architect, launch, and maintain a comprehensive, enterprise-grade design system and component library.
  • Define clear, scalable standards around navigation, responsive layouts, interaction patterns, and accessibility to ensure the ecosystem remains cohesive as it expands.
  • Ensure consistency and scalability across all CRI software experiences.

AI Innovation

  • AI-Driven Features: Design intelligent UX patterns that leverage AI to automate user tasks, streamline content scheduling, and provide predictive insights.
  • AI-Augmented Workflow: Utilize modern, AI-enabled tools to accelerate design cycles, from rapid prototyping to design-to-code concepting.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers to define requirements and success criteria.
  • Work in lockstep with Engineering to ensure technical feasibility and high-fidelity implementation.
  • Support Sales and Client Services by providing design documentation and UX insights that demonstrate the platform's value to Fortune 100 clients.

Experience & Education

  • BA/BS strongly preferred in Design, HCI, UX, Digital Media, Interaction Design, or equivalent experience.
  • 5–8 years of experience designing enterprise software applications.
  • Demonstrated experience producing end-to-end UX deliverables for complex SaaS products.
  • Strong proficiency with Figma, including design systems and prototyping.
  • Experience designing multi-module workflows (content, assets, devices, scheduling, dashboards).
  • Experience with (or strong curiosity for) AI-assisted design tools and modern UX workflows.
  • Bonus: experience with IoT, content management systems, digital signage, AdTech, or device monitoring platforms.

Key Competencies / Behaviors

  • Design Craftsmanship & Systems Thinking: Strong attention to detail in both visual and interaction design, combined with the ability to build and scale cohesive design systems.
  • Analytical Simplification: The ability to take complex, data-heavy enterprise requirements and translate them into clear, intuitive operator interfaces.
  • Clear & Purposeful Communication: Strong verbal, written, and visual communication skills, particularly when explaining the strategic reasoning behind design decisions to cross-functional partners.
  • Collaborative Diplomacy: A constructive partner who values open feedback and can successfully navigate the natural alignment process between design, product management, and engineering teams.
  • Autonomy & Accountability: A high degree of personal ownership; comfortable setting up a design workflow and delivering results independently from the ground up.
  • User Advocacy: A dedication to maintaining a high standard of design quality and keeping the end-user experience central to product decisions.
  • Adaptability & Curiosity: An open-minded approach to learning, with a genuine interest in exploring modern tools, design methodologies, and emerging AI workflows.

Core Values

The ideal candidate represents these six core values:

1. Passionate – Driven and energized by great design and meaningful user experiences.

2. Respectful – Embraces diverse perspectives; works collaboratively and inclusively.

3. Do the Right Thing – Operates with transparency, honesty, and integrity.

4. Helps First – Proactively supports teammates, partners, and customers.

5. Nimble Minded – Brings creativity and fresh thinking; adapts quickly to new challenges.

6. Expects Excellence – Holds themselves and others to a high standard for craftsmanship and delivery.

Benefits

• Company paid individual portion of medical, Life, Long and Short-Term Disability insurances;

• Access to participate in company dental and vision insurance programs;

• 401(k) program, including company paid match of up to 3% of annual salary; and

• Paid time off and holiday pay.

Thank you for your interest in Creative Realities. We look forward to hearing from you!
