What is a Pattern Designer job?

A Pattern Designer creates templates or designs used for manufacturing textiles, clothing, or other patterned products. They work with software or manual drafting techniques to develop precise patterns that ensure proper fit and aesthetics. Pattern Designers collaborate with fashion designers, product developers, and manufacturers to refine designs. Their role requires technical skills in pattern-making, material knowledge, and attention to detail to achieve the desired look and function.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pattern Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in textile or fashion design, a keen eye for detail, and knowledge of fabric properties, often supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software like Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, or specialized pattern-making programs is commonly required. Creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills are important soft skills in this field. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate, innovative patterns that meet both design and production requirements in a fast-paced industry.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Pattern Designer on a daily basis?

Pattern Designers are responsible for creating, modifying, and testing patterns for garments or textiles, either by hand or using CAD software. Their daily tasks often include meeting with designers or product managers to discuss concepts, converting sketches into precise patterns, and collaborating with sample makers to ensure fit and quality. They may also assess pre-production samples and make necessary adjustments to improve manufacturability. Working with various departments, including production, design, and quality assurance, is common to ensure seamless workflow from concept to finished product. This collaborative environment enables Pattern Designers to contribute directly to the success of new fashion lines or textile products.

  • Contribute to the visual look and feel of campaigns and products by executing designer-led concepts within established brand and campaign guardrails

  • Translate creative briefs and campaign direction into clear, thoughtful design solutions that support the intended message and goal
  • Take ownership of assigned projects from initial layout through final production-ready files
  • Support product design efforts from a visual and stylistic standpoint, including graphics, colorways, patterns, and overall aesthetic direction (non-functional design)

Collaboration & Creative Alignment
  • Partner closely with the Design Manager for creative direction, feedback, and mentorship
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to understand campaign purpose, core messaging, and strategic intent behind design requests
  • Work cross-functionally with marketing, e-commerce, product, and retail teams to support ongoing creative needs
  • Provide design input and asset needs to support photography and video planning, and assist on-set during photo and video shoots to help ensure final visuals align with campaign execution
  • Respond to feedback constructively and iteratively, refining work to meet both creative and strategic goals

Quality, Consistency & Production
  • Ensure all work adheres to BOTE brand standards, visual guidelines, and production requirements
  • Prepare clean, organized, and production-ready files for print and digital use
  • Double-check layouts, packaging specs, and technical details for accuracy and consistency
  • Maintain organized working files, templates, and shared brand assets
  • Help ensure brand consistency across campaigns, products, and customer touchpoints

OTHER TRAITS YOU SHOULD HAVE

  • Strong design fundamentals with curiosity about marketing strategy and intent
  • Comfortable balancing creativity with structure and feedback
  • Action-oriented and self-motivated
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Detail-oriented and organized without losing sight of the bigger picture
  • Interest in creating creator-style social content is a plus

What You've Accomplished
  • 2+ years of professional graphic design experience in an in-house or agency environment
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong design fundamentals across print and digital
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign); experience with Figma or similar tools a plus
  • Solid understanding of layout, typography, color, and production-ready file setup
  • Ability to take direction, absorb feedback, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Interest in outdoor, lifestyle, or product-driven brands is a plus

How You Thrive
You go "all out." You tend to approach everything you do with velocity. From your next exhilarating outdoor adventure to scaling meaningful peaks at work, you act with speed, direction, ethics, and forethought. Your efficiency is rooted in the knowledge that resources are not infinite. You are goal-oriented and focused on outcomes. When you see a challenge or obstacle to overcome, you jump in collaboratively to find a solution; team achievements should be celebrated more than individual performance. You are compelled to share your perspective because it is rooted in experience and synthesis thinking - you know that healthy debate yields better decisions. You are humble despite your impressive past accomplishments. Your communication style is honest and forthright, yet empathetic, with everyone.
KENT Outdoors is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.
