What is a Pattern Designer job?

A Pattern Designer creates templates or designs used for manufacturing textiles, clothing, or other patterned products. They work with software or manual drafting techniques to develop precise patterns that ensure proper fit and aesthetics. Pattern Designers collaborate with fashion designers, product developers, and manufacturers to refine designs. Their role requires technical skills in pattern-making, material knowledge, and attention to detail to achieve the desired look and function.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pattern Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in textile or fashion design, a keen eye for detail, and knowledge of fabric properties, often supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software like Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, or specialized pattern-making programs is commonly required. Creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills are important soft skills in this field. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate, innovative patterns that meet both design and production requirements in a fast-paced industry.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Pattern Designer on a daily basis?

Pattern Designers are responsible for creating, modifying, and testing patterns for garments or textiles, either by hand or using CAD software. Their daily tasks often include meeting with designers or product managers to discuss concepts, converting sketches into precise patterns, and collaborating with sample makers to ensure fit and quality. They may also assess pre-production samples and make necessary adjustments to improve manufacturability. Working with various departments, including production, design, and quality assurance, is common to ensure seamless workflow from concept to finished product. This collaborative environment enables Pattern Designers to contribute directly to the success of new fashion lines or textile products.

Job description

Overview

About the Team
The Tech Business Disruption team explores bold new frontiers in technology and business models to uncover growth opportunities that shape Intuit's future. We incubate breakthrough product concepts, experiment with emerging technologies, and identify disruptive trends that redefine how we deliver value to our customers and accelerate innovation across the company. Our work is fast-moving, ambiguous by design, and high-leverage. We move from insight to working prototype quickly, and the things we ship today will help inform Intuit's portfolio years from now.

About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Product Designer who's passionate about translating transformative insights into innovative product experiences. You'll apply qualitative and quantitative understanding to identify unmet user needs, emerging interaction patterns, and market shifts, helping teams design, prototype, and validate disruptive concepts that challenge the status quo.

This role calls for a curious, strategic designer who thrives in ambiguity, connects design patterns across industries, and inspires cross-functional teams to turn insights into impactful designs. You should be ready to roll up your sleeves to ship a working prototype by the end of week.

Responsibilities

  • Lead initiatives of significant scope and complexity working with the lead designer on the creative vision, strategy, and execution from earliest concept through validated prototype.
  • Synthesize behavioral data, customer research, and industry signals to imagine experiences as they might be, not as they are.
  • Apply strategic thinking to deliver innovative end-to-end user experiences that balance user needs, business goals, and technological realities across web and mobile.
  • Translate ambiguous concepts into wireframes, interaction models, high-fidelity designs, and prototypes that communicate compellingly to internal leaders, partners, and customers.
  • Partner closely with product managers, engineers, and researchers to move from hypothesis to learning as quickly as possible.
  • Use rapid prototyping, including AI-assisted tools and lightweight code, to test feasibility, generate excitement, and de-risk new directions.
  • Solicit and contribute thoughtful, candid feedback in design reviews, and use facilitative leadership to drive teams toward the best outcome for customers.
  • Advance a clear point of view backed by personal expertise, design rationale, customer data, and industry trends.
  • Manage multiple concurrent explorations, balancing depth of craft with speed of learning.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in product design, with a portfolio that demonstrates strong end-to-end craft across interaction, visual, and prototyping work.
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, HCI, Human Factors, Design Strategy, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise applying user-centered design processes while collaborating with customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Deep fluency in design and prototyping tools like Figma and have meaningful hands-on experience with AI prototyping tools such as Claude, Lovable, or Cursor.
  • Track record of setting a vision for great customer experiences, getting others behind that vision, and shipping products known for their user experience.
  • Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, including comfort presenting to and influencing senior leadership.
  • Experience designing for AI-powered or SaaS products on web and mobile.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing 0→1 products or working inside an incubation, R&D, or skunkworks environment.
  • Fluency in lightweight front-end code (HTML/CSS/JS) for prototyping, or strong proficiency using AI tools to generate working prototypes.
  • Experience designing agentic or generative AI experiences — including novel interaction patterns where conventions don't yet exist.
  • Background working across multiple industries or business models, with the ability to spot transferable patterns.
  • Experience partnering with researchers to design and run rapid concept tests and synthesize learning into next iterations.
