Job Overview
Performs law enforcement functions on University property necessary to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others. These duties will include patrols, event security, investigations, access control systems, and circulation and safety systems. This position is regulated through General Orders and Special Orders, as directed by superior officers, and as prescribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Training Academy (or equivalent) and other departmental training. The Incumbent may be assigned to either the Hilltop or Capitol Campus.
Work Interactions
Directly responsible to the Police Sergeant for fulfilling duties assigned, performing patrol functions, and specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in the protection of life and property at Georgetown University. This person works independently with general supervision. Incumbent works with other Police Officers, Communication Officers and Specialists, Security Officers, and Student Guards. Incumbent is one of the "faces" of the Georgetown University Police Department. Incumbent is one of the "faces" of the Georgetown University Police Department.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • High School diploma (or equivalent) required. College degree preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and must be able to pass Georgetown University driver's certification.
  • All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation.

  • For Non-Lateral Hires: Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Campus Special Police Officer Commission. Must be able to complete all required university police training to include certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and OC-based Aerosol Subject Restraint. Training includes successful completion of the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy within the probation period.
  • For Lateral Hires: Must have current certification in Baton/OC Spray. Must have successfully completed the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent training and certification from a civilian or military law enforcement academy. Should have basic to intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and police policies and procedures.
  • Must be comfortable using computers including Microsoft Word, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications is essential.
  • Must possess tact, patience, a professional and courteous demeanor, and a pleasant personality in order to deal with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members. Must respect the use of police powers in relation to a University environment. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing, are essential.

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications
• 1 to 3 years of security, law enforcement or military experience is preferred, but not required.

Position is considered essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. Must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.
Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$22.88 - $42.10
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
