The Patient Sitter/Patient Companion provides one-on-one supervision and companionship to patients in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. The sitter’s primary responsibility is to ensure patient safety by observing the patient continuously, preventing falls or unsafe behaviors, and promptly notifying nursing staff of any changes in the patient’s condition. Sitters do not provide skilled nursing care or perform medical procedures.

Requirements
  • Experience as a sitter in a hospital, nursing home or rehabilitation center
  • Good Observation skills e.g. monitor the patient and identify any changes in patient’s physical condition, mental condition and/or  behavior and report to the hospital staff 
  • Ability to communicate with hospital staff, patient and patient's family members
  • Ability to compassionately provide emotional support and care to patient
  • Ability to follow the facility's policies and protocol including infection control and HIPAA.
  • Valid CPR certification
  • Negative result for Tuberculosis (TB) test along with chest X-ray
  • Documentation proof of Hepatitis B vaccination 
  • Authorization to work in the US
  • Ability to pass standard drug screening 
  • Ability to pass a criminal background test
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • CNA, HHA and/or PCA certification 
  • Caregiver experience
  • Reliable transportation 
Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide continuous one-on-one observation of assigned patient.
  • Ensure patient safety by preventing falls, wandering, or unsafe behaviors.
  • Reorient and calmly redirect confused or agitated patients.
  • Notify nursing staff immediately of any changes in the patient’s condition or behavior.
  • Assist with non-medical comfort measures, such as conversation, reading, or companionship.
  • Help with meal setup and encourage fluids if permitted by nursing staff.
  • Maintain a clean and safe patient environment.
  • Follow all facility, and agency policies, including infection control and HIPAA.
  • Accurately document observation notes according to facility and agency requirements.
  • Maintain professional communication with facility staff and the agency.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain alert throughout the entire shift.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reposition chairs or light equipment as needed.
  • Ability to respond quickly during emergencies.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while continuously monitoring the patient.
