Job description

Department: Lab Administration

FTE: 1.0

Workdays: Monday - Friday

Shift(s): Days | Shift Length: 8 hours | Location: In-Person

Purpose of this position: Under supervised direction of a board-certified pathologist, performs high-level tasks within surgical pathology to include simple to complex gross dissection, frozen section, and resident education in addition to general planning, evaluating, and coordinating of daily workflow.

Responsibilities
  • Performs specimen gross examination
  • Selects, dissects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination
  • Performs frozen sections
  • Performs gross and microscopic photography
  • Prepares and utilizes necessary materials for teaching, training and evaluation of students (pathology residents, non-pathology residents, and medical students) and technical staff
  • Maintains specimen storage (both short and long term) to meet regulatory, legal and teaching requirements
  • Performs intraoperative kidney biopsy adequacy service
  • Collects data for and assesses quality indicators for surgical pathology
  • Assist with oversight, testing, and optimization of laboratory information system workflows related to surgical pathology services
  • Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory agencies standards
  • Assists in the evaluation of equipment and instrumentation
  • Writes procedures and provides technical direction as needed to staff
  • Assists with billing and audits and assurance of compliance
  • Demonstrates patient and family centered care behaviors
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences and completion of formal Pathologists’ Assistant training program
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Pathologist’s Assistant by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or an approved equivalent
  • As a condition of employment, those hired “as eligible” must become certified within 24 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a pathologist assistant preferred but new graduates welcome to apply
