Albany Medical Center (AMC) is seeking a Pathologists’ Assistant to join the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Capital Region’s only academic medical center.

This is an opportunity for a Pathologists’ Assistant who enjoys complex and diverse surgical pathology, meaningful professional autonomy, close collaboration with pathologists and residents, and an active role in education and laboratory practice.

Our Pathologists’ Assistants are integral members of the surgical pathology team. You will work alongside subspecialty pathologists, pathology residents, histology professionals, and other laboratory staff in a busy academic environment with a broad and challenging case mix.

As a Pathologists’ Assistant, you will:• Perform gross examination, description, dissection, and sampling of a broad spectrum of surgical pathology specimens, ranging from routine biopsies and resections to large and complex oncologic specimens.• Evaluate and prepare tissue for intraoperative consultation and frozen section, working directly with pathologists during time-sensitive clinical decision-making.• Photograph and document gross specimens and ensure accurate specimen orientation, sampling, and submission.• Serve as a resource for difficult or unusual specimens and contribute to consistent, high-quality grossing practices.• Teach and mentor pathology residents and other learners in gross examination, dissection, specimen handling, and surgical pathology technique. We encourage and support the pursuit of an academic title through Albany Med’s Appointments and Promotions Committee.• Work collaboratively with pathologists, residents, histology staff, operating room personnel, and laboratory leadership to continuously improve quality and workflow.• Participate in quality improvement, procedure development, validation, education, and other departmental initiatives according to your interests and experience.

What We’re Looking For:• Master’s degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program, ASCP certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA(ASCP)), and current New York State Pathologists’ Assistant license (or eligibility to obtain New York State licensure).• Strong knowledge of gross anatomy, surgical pathology, specimen handling, and laboratory safety• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a high-volume academic environment• Previous experience in an academic or high-volume surgical pathology practice preferred but not required.
