St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport has more than 3,200 employees. It includes a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children. St. Vincent's is the first hospital in Fairfield County to be integrated into the Hartford HealthCare network, and is the system's second-largest hospital.
Position Summary:
The Lead Pathologist Assistant works under the technical direction of the pathologist to perform surgical gross prosection and to provide technical training and educational development of technical staff, works under the direction of the Anatomic Pathology Manager assisting in managing daily workflow and monitoring quality indicators for the Anatomic Pathology Department and collaborates with all pathology staff ensuring patient safety, quality processes and satisfactory customer service.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Performs surgical gross pro-section, and prepares intra-operative consultation preparations and makes gross description diagnosis and assessment of submitted tissues to aid in Pathologist's diagnosis.
  • Manages the daily workflow of the surgical cutting rooms to ensure efficient and timely processing of surgical specimens.
  • Maintain Pathologist Assistant schedule and coverage at Hartford Hospital and other HHC affiliates to ensure cross coverage for vacation and emergency situations.
  • Model the effective, efficient operation of the department: scheduling, problem solving, assisting production, improving quality and productivity while maintaining positive customer service relationships Maintains the department photographic files and assists in photographic techniques in support of teaching conferences and other educational activities.
  • Participate in and provides feedback at appropriate meetings, ie Daily Huddles, Standardization, etc. Help carry-out/oversee decisions made at the meetings within the scope of responsibility.
  • Provide primary prosector training/technical education/guidance/development of PAs, Pathology Residents and Fellows and grossing technicians. Provides support training for pathology laboratory assistants.
  • Monitor and maintain the quality of the grossing areas and frozen section areas, including Connecticut Children's and any other offsite grossing /frozen section locations. Reports quality indicators and issues to the Pathology Department Manager . Act as liaison between PAs/Residents and Histotech supervisor to improve overall quality of sections.
  • Assist in competency reviews of Pathologist Assistants, grossing technicians, lab assistants and Residents and Fellows.
  • Participate in and support pathology IT initiatives (to include Whole Slide Digital Scanning and Digital photography, etc.) or coordinate with manager to assign a PA to assist in these initiatives.
  • Engage in H3W by actively and positively participate in Lean Daily Management activities Demonstrate a professional attitude and appearance at all times. Consistently demonstrate flexibility and good judgement when making decisions. Confer with coworkers, supervisors, managers and pathologists as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the scope of the position such as research projects (e.g. Cytoveris) or coordinate with manager to assign a PA

Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Health Sciences and completion of an NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant Program
  • Two(2) years Pathologist Assistant experience
  • Pathologists' Assistant certification (ASCP/AAPA)
  • Proven ability to creatively resolve problems and formulate solutions
