How much do patent engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for patent engineer in Oregon is $161,412.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $117,900.00 and $190,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a patent engineer do?

As a patent engineer, you review patent applications to help determine whether or not a patent agent should grant a patent for inventions or intellectual property. In this role, you may review a draft of the product, help research any similar existing products, and prepare additional documents and information as necessary. Despite the name, this job is more akin to being an attorney than an engineer, especially when it comes to checking for issues of copyright or patent infringement. Patent engineers should not be confused with patent agents. Patent agents generally have a senior position and make the final decision regarding application matters while patent engineers assist with research and paperwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a patent engineer?

To thrive as a Patent Engineer, you need a strong technical background—often a degree in engineering or science—paired with knowledge of intellectual property laws and patent drafting. Familiarity with patent databases, prior art search tools, and patent management software is typically required. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong written communication skills are crucial for interpreting inventions and preparing thorough documentation. These skills ensure accurate patent filings, effective communication with inventors and attorneys, and successful protection of intellectual property.

What are the most common challenges faced by patent engineers when collaborating with inventors and R&D teams?

Patent Engineers often encounter the challenge of translating complex technical innovations into clear, legally sound patent documents. Effective collaboration with inventors and R&D teams is essential, as it requires bridging the gap between technical details and patent requirements. Patent Engineers must ask precise questions, ensure thorough disclosure, and sometimes mediate differing perspectives about what aspects of an invention should be emphasized. Building strong communication skills and a solid understanding of both technology and intellectual property law are key to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Patent Engineer vs Patent Agent?

AspectPatent EngineerPatent Agent
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, technical expertiseEngineering or scientific degree, patent law exam
Work EnvironmentR&D departments, patent departments in tech companiesPatent law firms, patent offices, corporate legal teams
Employer & Industry UsageTech, engineering, manufacturing sectorsLegal firms, patent agencies, corporations with patent portfolios
Common Search & ComparisonPatent Engineer vs Patent Agent

While both Patent Engineers and Patent Agents work closely with patents, Patent Engineers focus on technical analysis and patent drafting within companies, whereas Patent Agents are licensed to file and prosecute patents legally. The roles often overlap in technical background, but Patent Agents have legal authority to represent clients before patent offices.

Are patent engineers in demand?

Patent engineers are in demand due to the growing need for intellectual property protection across industries such as technology, pharmaceuticals, and engineering. They often require technical expertise and knowledge of patent law, and employment prospects are strong in regions with active innovation and patent filings.

Job description

The group you'll be a part of
You'll be joining the WETS Product Group, a dynamic, cross-disciplinary engineering team focused on innovation and excellence in new product development for semiconductor advanced packaging. The WETS products group focuses primarily on liquid-based processing technologies. Our team thrives on collaboration, technical rigor, and creative problem-solving. We work closely with colleagues across the globe to tackle complex engineering challenges, using advanced modeling and simulation to drive the next generation of high-performance solutions.
The impact you'll make
As a Modeling Engineer 3 in the WETS Product Group, your work will directly influence the design and advancement of our semiconductor capital equipment products for the advanced packaging field, both for wafers and panels. By applying advanced simulation techniques and engineering insight, you'll help accelerate product development cycles, reduce costly iterations, and enable breakthrough innovations. Your contributions will shape critical design decisions, support global collaboration, and drive technical excellence across the organization. This is a high-visibility role where your expertise will make a measurable difference in the success of our products and the satisfaction of our customers.
What you'll do
  • Build Multiphysics models (Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element (FEA), Electric current and Electrochemical models) of complex reactor systems to support product and process development.
  • Collaborate with global engineering teams across the US, Europe, and Asia to simulate and solve multi-physics problems.
  • Simulate process conditions including structural, flow, thermal, chemical reactions, and mass transport to inform and optimize design decisions.
  • Recommend design solutions based on simulation results and engineering analysis.
  • Develop and execute design of experiments (DOE) and conduct lab experiments to validate simulation results using quantitative metrics.
  • Own the full lifecycle of computational modeling projects-from problem definition and model development to result evaluation, documentation, and design implementation support.
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) including thermo-mechanical, fatigue (high and low cycle), and non-linear analysis to ensure mechanical design integrity.
  • Generate technical reports, publications, and presentations; communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of Intellectual Property (IP) through innovative modeling and simulation work.

Who we're looking for
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficiency in commercial simulation tools such as ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL Multiphysics, or similar.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS Mechanical, Abaqus).
  • Strong understanding of hydrodynamics and structural mechanics.
  • Experience and expertise in electrochemical or electroplating systems is a great plus
  • Experience and expertise in field of microbubbles is a great plus
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear technical reports and present complex findings to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills in a cross-functional, global team environment.

Preferred qualifications
  • Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience with chemical reaction modeling and mass transport phenomena.
  • Familiarity with scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for simulation automation and data analysis.
  • Prior experience in semiconductor, energy, or advanced manufacturing industries.
  • Track record of published technical papers or granted patents in the field of modeling and simulation.
