Job description

Job Title: Weekend Laboratory Technician (QC/SRP)
Department: Quality
Location: Chestertown, MD
Reports To: OC Supervisor
Pay Rate: $17-$19/hr with a $2 shift differential

Schedule & Hours:

3rd shift, Friday & Saturday, 11 pm - 7:15 am

Position Summary: The Quality Control Technician supports the production of high-quality products by performing routine tests, inspections, and basic laboratory tasks. This role follows written procedures to verify that materials and finished goods meet company quality standards. The QC technician records test results, maintains a clean and organized work area, and ensures that laboratory equipment is functioning properly. All training for testing methods, equipment uses, and documentation requirements is provided. This position is essential in helping the company deliver safe, accurate, and reliable products to customers. This role also supports SRP reagent preparation and coverage for the SRP production area as needed.


Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Education & Experience
    • High school diploma or equivalent; High school chemistry, general lab coursework, or hands-on lab/production experience required.
    • Associate or bachelor’s degree in a science field (Chemistry, Biology, or related discipline) is a plus.
    • Experience working with basic laboratory tools (balances, pH meters, glassware, meters) or willingness to learn through provided training.
  • Knowledge & Skills
    • Ability to follow detailed written instructions and standard operating procedures.
    • General computer skills, including the ability to use email, enter data, and work in Excel spreadsheets.
    • Excellent math skills including basic math and algebra.
    • Good color perception for tests and inspections involving visual color matching.

    • Ability to stay focused and work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with Production, QC, and R&D teams.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Product Testing & Inspection
    • Perform routine quality checks on materials and finished products following written procedures.
    • Conduct tests such as pH measurements, weight checks, titrations, and basic solution testing.
    • Inspect components (tubes, labels, apparatus, overlays, dip cells, strips, etc.) for defects before use.
    • Support testing across various product lines including reagents, powders, spin disks, test strips, tablets, and SRP solutions.
    • Identify and report out‑of‑spec results or unusual findings to QC leadership.
  • Sample & Retains Management
    • Collect, label, organize, and store product retains according to company procedures.
    • Perform routine testing or visual checks on retains as required.
    • Dispose of retains, disk waste, tablet waste, and other materials according to safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Solution, Standard, and Material Preparation
    • Prepare simple solutions, standards, vats, and premixes used in testing.
    • Follow documented instructions for measuring, mixing, and labeling materials.
    • Maintain proper storage and expiration tracking for standards and solutions.
    • Assist in preparation and management of Proof Sets as required by specific product lines.
  • Equipment Use & Daily Maintenance
    • Use laboratory tools such as balances, pH meters, colorimeters, and specialized meters.
    • Perform daily instrument checks to verify accuracy (balance checks, meter verification, etc.).
    • Keep equipment clean and notify the supervisor of any issues or calibration concerns.
  • Documentation & Reporting
    • Record all test results clearly and accurately in logs, forms, batch records, and electronic systems.
    • Determine pass/fail disposition based on written specifications and test results.
    • Generate Certificates of Analysis (COAs) using established templates.
    • Review supplier Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for raw materials as part of incoming inspection.
    • Complete daily QC documents such as lot sheets and testing logs.
    • Ensure all work is documented in real time according to SOPs and quality standards.
  • Inventory & Lab Readiness
    • Maintain inventory of lab tools, chemicals, and testing supplies; notify team when stock is low.
    • Perform daily housekeeping to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
    • Support 6S standards and ensure the lab is always audit‑ready.
  • SRP Reagent Support (Newark Location)
    • Prepare SRP reagents, solutions, and related materials in accordance with approved procedures and supply Spin production with reagents as needed.
    • Provide coverage for the SRP production area including performing standard testing, documenting results, and communicating any issues to QC and Production leadership.
    • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety compliance within the SRP work area.
  • Cross-Functional Support
    • Communicate clearly with Production, R&D, Receiving, and other QC team members regarding test results, component issues, or adjustments.
    • Assist in training new QC Technicians once proficient.
    • Attend daily shift huddles to review priorities, communicate expectations, and address team needs.
    • Participate in improvement activities, Kaizens, and problem‑solving efforts as requested.
  • Other Duties
    • Perform additional tasks assigned by QC Supervisors or Management to support departmental needs.
    • Perform backup support for certain laboratory or quality tasks when the primary individual is unavailable (after appropriate training).
    • May support multiple value streams or locations as business needs require.


Miscellaneous

  • Participates in Lean activities, including but not limited to:
    • Lean training and lean events such as Kaizen or a 5-day event.
    • 6S program in QA/QC or other assigned areas.
    • DMAICs. Continuously look for ways to improve both the department’s and own individual efficiencies and time management, as well as ways to improve any aspect of the Company’s operations and develop and implement DMAICs accordingly.
  • Notifies Supervisors/Managers of any production, equipment, safety, personnel problems, etc., and cooperates in resolving such issues as well. For example, requests assistance when systems prevent the efficient performance of duties or when a system fails.
  • Provides Supervisors/Managers with feedback to determine where additional training would benefit and obtain additional training as necessary.
  • Assist in other department activities as needed.
  • Floats to and works in other manufacturing areas as needed.
  • Complies with all company policies (i.e. personnel, safety, etc.).

Environmental Factors & Mental / Physical Demands

  • Works indoors in a temperature‑controlled laboratory environment with routine exposure to chemicals, powders, and testing solutions (training and PPE provided).
  • May occasionally perform tasks inside a fume hood or near ventilation equipment.
  • Requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, and lift up to 40 lbs as part of normal laboratory and material‑handling activities.
  • Must be able to visually distinguish colors for tests involving color changes or comparison.
  • Requires the ability to focus on detailed tasks, follow written procedures, and maintain accuracy during repetitive testing.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, which may include a chemical respirator depending on the task.
