Job Description Summary
The University of La Verne's Center for Multicultural Services, serves the entire university community with programs and services that support the participation and cultural enrichment of all by actively encouraging inclusion and celebration of the rich diversity present.
The Student Assistant will support the work of the CMS which involves supporting the cultural clubs and organizations on campus, cultural month heritage programming, Black and Latinx Living Learning Communities, Access Give Something Back Scholars Program, special cultural events (collaborative events), cultural graduation celebrations, virtual online programming, and other appropriate activities.
Specific Duties
Job Description Summary-Candidate will assist with:
  • General office duties-day-to-day operation of the Center for Multicultural Services, receptionist, typing documents, data entry, creating brochures, flyers, filing, photocopying, collating, tabling, work on social media, and keeping the Center orderly.
  • Program or workshop coordination-assisting with publicity, posting of flyers, outreach, gathering needed supplies, set-up, take-down; assist in supporting cultural clubs and first generation programs, as well as participate on student panels for visiting potential students.
  • Student worker will participate in the Diversity Retreats and other trainings offered by the Center for the purpose of developing cultural competency and familiarity with facilitating difficult human relations issues.
  • Student worker will assist in supporting the programmatic efforts in the Black and Latinx Scholars Living Learning Communities.
  • Support the Access Program efforts.
  • Research support-evaluation data input, assist in identifying sources of scholarships, fellowships, and leadership opportunities for students; other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidate must have a basic understanding or interest with human relations/diversity, equity, and social justice issues as well as a commitment to learn about human relation issues.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Ability to know, understand and work with University of La Verne policies and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritize and complete assigned work duties and handle a wide variety of tasks at one time.
  • Responsible demeanor (i.e., observing work hours consistently and promptly, etc.).
  • General computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Canva, GivePulse, HandShake, SurveyMonkey, Flickr, Qualtrics, PowerPoint, and other appropriate software programs.
  • Ability to keep a database.
  • Ability to research and compile data via the internet that would inform the current realities with human relations issues; create stats and infographics from data (posters).
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Candidate must be able to work in a team setting; candidate must be recipient of a Federal Work Study; candidate must be willing to learn as they work.
  • MUST BE A ULV STUDENT.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working with first generation college students and their families as well as the experience of having facilitated human relations/diversity, equity, and social justice training around a multitude of social identities is strongly preferred.
  • Having the experience of serving historically marginalized communities in the United States, believing that all students can succeed, having the ability to connect with all students and to challenge them to be their best; to have empathy, love, and compassion for those you serve and to expect nothing but the best from them.
  • Customer service experience is a plus. Having expertise in utilizing social media for advertising and promotion of events, as well as experience in graphic design.

Benefits Summary
Employees are eligible for the following benefits:
One hour of Paid Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 24 hours of Paid Sick Leave per year and capped at 48 hours.
University of La Verne Defined Contribution Retirement Plan - can contribute employee voluntary contributions, excluding wages derived from federal work study funds.
In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week, will be eligible for medical coverage through the University of La Verne.
Covered under the University of La Verne Workers Compensation Insurance.
