Electronic Technical Specialist II
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a skilled and highly motivated professional to join the Traffic Management Division's Signal Operations Group in Salt Lake City. Our team manages the operation of more than 1,400 traffic signals and integrated devices statewide to ensure the safety and mobility of the traveling public.
About the Role
As an Electronic Technical Specialist II, you will perform complex technical tasks. You will be responsible for installing, programming, and troubleshooting traffic signal controllers and sophisticated network systems. Your expertise will directly impact the efficiency of Utah's transportation infrastructure, ensuring that signal timing and operations remain safe and reliable.

Key Responsibilities
Your time will be balanced between the Traffic Operations Center (TOC) and various field locations. Key responsibilities include:
  • System Programming: Configuring traffic signal controllers to facilitate safe and efficient vehicle flow.
  • Technical Integration: Implementing unique signal configurations and integrating devices into complex communication networks.
  • Detection & Software Management: Configuring software for advanced traffic detection devices and supporting network systems.
  • Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Resolving issues related to signal timing and operations triggered by public reports, equipment damage, or automated system alerts.
  • Data Analysis: Utilizing system data to evaluate the performance of signals and associated hardware.
  • Electrical Maintenance: Wiring and maintaining control equipment and electrical circuits within signal systems.

Qualifications
In order to be considered, you must have:
  • Experience: At least two years of professional electrical/electronics work experience or electronics education (or a combination of both).
  • Certification/License: Must hold International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I and II certifications or be able to get these certifications within 1 year of hire. UDOT provides this training.
  • Licensure: A valid driver's license is required.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with electrical systems alongside computer proficiency and programming concepts.
  • Computer Literacy: Strong proficiency in using computers and specialized software systems.
  • Availability: Must be available for scheduled after-hours and on-call duties on a recurring basis. Operating heavy equipment, including bucket trucks, to access signal infrastructure may be required during these times.

Underfill Option
If you have less than two years of experience or do not yet have an IMSA Level II certification, you may be considered for the Electronic Technical Specialist I level.
Requirement: You must hold IMSA Level I or be able to obtain within one year of hire. UDOT provides this training.
Starting wage: $26.71
Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates who possess:
  • An Associate's degree or higher in Electrical or Electronic Technology or equivalent experience
  • IMSA Level II (or higher) certification at the time of hire.
  • Four or more years of combined education and professional experience in a related field.
  • Strong computer program skills (Excel/Sheets, basic computer programming skills a plus)

Supplemental Information & Working Conditions
You must be willing to work under the following conditions:
  • Testing: This position requires a pre-employment drug screen and participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program. Please note: job offers to those who are not currently on the random drug list may be conditional pending drug test results.
  • Travel: Occasional overnight travel throughout the state of Utah may be necessary.
  • Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
    • Safety: You will work at heights of 50+ feet, around live traffic and with voltages up to 600V.
    • Physicality: You must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in cramped or outdoor environments.
    • This position will be 50% office work and 50% outdoor field work.
